A driver allegedly struck an Asian man with a vehicle, unleashing racist statements against the victim and his family. Authorities identified the suspect as John Sullivan, 77.
The victim’s sister Desiree Thien told outlets that she, her brother, and her three children were outside a post office in Quincy, Massachusetts, on Friday morning when they saw the suspect — Sullivan — speeding. She said her brother discuss the speeding with Sullivan. The 77-year-old allegedly made a racist comment and threatened them.
According to Thien in a WCVB report: “He said, ‘Go back to China. I’m going to go into the post office, come back out in five minutes. If you’re still here, I’m going to kill all of you.'”

Find out what happened next:

Sullivan pleaded not guilty to charges. He is held without bail, pending the results of a dangerousness hearing set for Dec. 7
Why would anyone think of charging such a fine citizen as this?

Sick old fart needs to see substantial jail time. If he doesn't get charged with attempted murder I'd be surprised. "I'm going to kill you" surely establishes intent.

We certainly know these "Barbarian" types exist, because there some just like him... within these type of Forums.

That article is poorly written and full of grammatical errors. I had to check to make sure it was real.

If this man is found guilty he should spend the rest of his life behind bars.

By the look of his age that won't be long anyways. I suspect a slap on the wrist. Now, if he were black, oh my.......................

It depends on how much of an example the DA wants to make

Probably more to the story than the news article suggests. Most of these incidents begin when two parties willfully engage in verbal exchanges which are pointless. As a pedestrian you are not ever going to convince a bad, unsafe, or entitled driver to act like a good citizen by yelling at them. They may already be crazy, so why engage in a argument with a fool operating several tons of steel on wheels?

For drivers, there is never any good idea to put your car near any pedestrian, especially not when you are angry. A 77 year old man is not a 18 year old. Most of us stop being loose cannons long before middle age.

THERE IS more to this story, in case you missed it:
Go back to China
So we know the motivation besides the anger.

I heard he was blaring reruns of Rush Limbaugh on his radio.

I suspect he thought they guy was a BLM protestor. And as we have seen here hitting BLM protestors with your car is completely acceptable.

"Go back to China!" would be a terrible and rude thing for somebody to say. But this is the headline in a news article designed to get our attention. Everyone deserves a day in court, and I was not there to witness the incident, the context, or what may have been done or said by the other party--- and that is what courts are for.

So, "we" really don't know anything other than what a some internet news article reported, and we all know that those are never 100% for certain even with the best reporters and news editors in the chain.

You see this is my point. Supposed victims when giving their side of the story to the police or the media will generally tend to downplay their part in what may have led to an altercation. When her brother went over "to discuss" Sullivan's driving, what does that mean? How was Sullivan approached? Was it really just a polite conversation where a concerned citizen just wanted to "discuss" safer driving in a calm and friendly way, or did Thien approach the older man in a rude way, maybe making the man feel threatened? And then later the only part anyone wants to remember is the rude or racist comment the older man made, after a younger man may have gotten in his face to yell at him?

I have seen these types of incidents a thousand times, and people are generally unwilling to admit how they may have contributed to the conflict. I'm not excusing racist remarks, but there is old saying which goes 'it takes two to tango".

senile old man

1 year younger than Biden fyi

Blame the victim always works so well to excuse heinous acts. You may not be excusing racist remarks but you certainly are trying to excuse using a vehicle to run down someone who "may have contributed to the conflict."

If the racial epithets can be established, then I'm pretty sure he's not only looking at state criminal charges (which are quite serious on their own), but it's also a federal hate crimes offense, and given the driver attempted to kill the victim, that's not just a 10-year sentence, that's potentially a life sentence -- in federal prison.
