    [W:583, 2190] Political Compass Thread

Both tests are pretty problematic - especially the Political Compass one that the thread is about - so I'll share the results from the better of the two. I also answered in the extreme for a couple of questions because there wasn't a less extreme answer in the same vein, so I'm a litter further...

    I dislike liberal arrogance

I tend to take issue when folks are arrogant enough to develop some ideological world view and think that makes reasonable sense. I love it when folks are more interested in working towards solutions to issues versus taking a stance on them.

    Which is worse...

I chose liar, though I'm not sure I necessarily see a difference. If the person defending the liar has no knowledge of the liar's lies, then that person is reasonably innocent. If they do know they are defending a lie, then they are becoming complicit in the lie themselves, making them a liar.

    Uncomfortable question re mass shootings

Truthfully, it seems we are already there. There doesn’t appear to be the pragmatism required to move forward on very much meaningful legislation, and even if there were, it’s still unlikely to matter in the grand scheme of things. Some of this stems from the fact that we might not understand...

    Is healthcare a right?

It probably should be. A good government is ultimately measured by ensuring that its people are healthy, well fed, entertained, and protected. If a state can govern a nation where folks can attain these things reasonably, it is probably legitimate and sovereign.

Should America focus all this energy on other countries with so many problems of its own ?

Depends on what to which you’re specifically referring. I know a number of folks take issue with foreign aid spending, for instance, but it typically gives us a lot of bang for our buck, and is an inconsequential amount of money in the grand scheme of things. That said, we often attempt to...

Removing Hats To Display Respect For the Anthem

I’m an oddball. Even after a little over a decade in the Army, it’s difficult for me to wrap my head around the iconography of the flag and the national anthem. Not that I can’t see the intent behind it, and to be sure, displays of patriotism in large groups have had an emotional impact on me at...

Americans disapprove of anthem protest and Trump's response, poll finds

Certainly some are in denial, but there are many who just need help understanding the when, where, and how of racial inequality, and few people seem willing to engage them. We have to be willing to do that, even if it’s difficult and unpleasant. As for the protest itself, it’s succeeded halfway...

Americans disapprove of anthem protest and Trump's response, poll finds

To be fair, I think it’s possible to believe in free speech and expression while also taking issue with the protest. As with most issues, to me there seems to be a sincere lack of empathy by the loudest voices on this issue. On the one hand, no one can seem to fathom how someone could find...

Americans disapprove of anthem protest and Trump's response, poll finds

This illustrates the gray area that hasn’t been talked about very much. For instance, I disapprove of the protest, but I also disapproved of Trump’s comments. And I don’t find the protest inherently disrespectful either.

Which nation poses the greatest threat to American intersts?

This gave me a Charles. Thank you!

Which nation poses the greatest threat to American intersts?

Great question. This one is tough to answer, because you can make a case for pretty much any of the choices given. I settled on Russia given the potential for further cooperation with Iran, particularly on Syria and, by extension, broader Middle Eastern policy.

NFL now least liked sport, core fans down 31%

As a lifelong fan of NASCAR and lover of folks of all colors, it’s a shame that stereotype continues.

Peaceful Protests during the anthem, what are they?

As with most issues, to me there seems to be a sincere lack of empathy by the loudest voices on this issue. On the one hand, no one can seem to fathom how someone could find those actions disrespectful, while on the other, no one is asking why some players have felt the need to protest. Instead...

Is the recent criticism of Melania Trump's wardrobe fair?

I voted “it’s all fair game.” I think it’s pretty silly that people care, but eh, comes with the territory of being a political figure. I think she can handle it though.
