Friends in Ukraine tell me that actor Volodmyr Zelensky has won the presidential election. Expected. He enjoyed a 4:1 advantage in pre-election polls.

Sitting president Petro Poroshenko conceded his election defeat about an hour ago.

The populist Zelensky displayed plenty of form during the campaign, but little substance. He did promise that tackling corruption was his #1 priority. We'll see.

He will not enjoy any sort of majority in the Verkhovna Rada (Parliament). Nationwide parliamentary elections will take place on 27 October 2019.

Source in Moscow denies Russia’s funding Zelenskiy campaign... yet Moscow does not have a good track record of honesty, for example - lying about Russian mercenaries and weapons/armor in Donbas/Crimea, and then admitting it.

Don't trust him. Not for a second. Kremlin-toady, probably along with a lot more of the oligarchy than we here in the West realize. Zelensky will probably end up being another puppet of the Kremlin or the Lukashenko Regime/Anti-Western Blocs

Ukraine's TV President Is Dangerously Pro-Russian

There is no mention of Russian attempts to quash Ukrainian independence since 1991. This curious absence suggests either that Zelensky, who serves as the show’s executive producer, has no idea how to deal with a very real existential threat to Ukraine or, far worse, that he doesn’t believe that there is one. At best, then, a President Zelensky would be prone to serious mistakes in his relations with Putin; at worst, he might be willing to make concessions that would hollow out Ukrainian sovereignty.

The absence of Putin’s Russia has another implication. It’s impossible to understand Ukraine’s war in the eastern Donbass region—the inspiration for the show’s own civil conflicts—without an appreciation for Putin’s invasion and annexation of Crimea; his support for separatists in Ukraine’s southeast; his continued basing of several thousand soldiers there; his stationing of tens of thousands of Russian troops, tanks, and artillery units along Ukraine’s border; and his blockade of Ukraine’s ports on the Sea of Azov.

I wonder if the Ukrainian electorate pondered "Kremlin toady" versus "NATO toady" in reaching their conclusion?

No one is actually certain where Zelensky stands in regard to the Kremlin. He has publicly stated he wants occupied Ukrainian lands returned and compensation paid.

Zelensky's position on the Russian situation and Eastern Ukraine are about as pragmatic as they can be. Calling out Putin and Russia for their actions while at the same time acknowledging it's not realistic for Ukraine to take it back by force. He's talked about restoring Donbass as an "autonomous" part of Ukraine while admitting Crimea likely isn't going to be returned to Ukrainian control unless there's a regime change in Russia.

I expect him to work out some agreement that sees Donbass "return" to Ukrainian control, but with a large degree of autonomy, ala Dagestan in Russia.

And for the Russian propagandists and DP conspiricists among us, far-right nationalist coalition candidate Ruslan Koshulynskyi (National Corps/Svoboda/Right Sector) received 0.9% of the popular vote.

This is even less than the 1.16% that Oleh Tyahnybok obtained in the 2014 presidential elections. And to top it off the election winner, Volodmyr Zelensky, is Jewish.

-----------

Over 37,000 candidate and party observers were registered. 34 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) already registered by the CEC to observe the election could also register additional observers; the status of observers who were registered for the first round was extended for the second round. Additional international observers could be registered with the CEC until 13 April. In total, over 82,000 domestic observers were registered by 84 NGOs and 2,700 international observers were registered by 41 foreign states and international organizations. The ODIHR EOM includes 20 experts in the capital and 89 long-term observers deployed throughout the country. On election day, 690 observers from 44 countries were deployed, including 629 long-term and short-term observers deployed by the ODIHR, as well as a 33-member delegation from the OSCE PA, a 19-member delegation from the PACE, and a nine-member delegation from the EP. Opening was observed in 182 polling stations and voting was observed in more than 2,300 polling stations across the country. Counting was observed in 264 polling stations, and the tabulation in 112 DECs.

Election day was peaceful, and CEC announced voter turnout of 62.1 per cent, slightly lower than in the first round. The CEC started posting on its website preliminary election results broken down by polling station before 22:00 on election day. The incumbent conceded defeat shortly after the polls closed. The opening was assessed positively in all but 3 of the 182 polling stations observed. With a few exceptions, established procedures were followed. A few polling stations observed opened with slight delays or ahead of time. Voting was assessed positively in 99 per cent of polling stations observed. IEOM assessed that the PECs worked transparently, performed well and almost always adhered to established procedures.

Hopefully he is more interested in peace and prosperity for his people than was his predecessor oligarch.

Incumbent president Petro Poroshenko only captured one oblast, Lviv Oblast in far western Ukraine.

The successful ending of the presidential election monitoring is the start of a new Foreign Ministry-ODIHR project to monitor the parliamentary elections on 27 October 2019.

A farewell thank you to Ukrainians from Petro and Maryna Poroshenko from the Administration Building on Bankova Street.

Zelensky is Jewish; a point of interest, as many Ukrainians are - were - thought to be antisemitic.

He played the role of President in a popular Ukrainian TV series. About the best example of life imitating art there has ever been.

Pretty much destroys the Kremlin mantra the Ukraine is being run by a Nazi junta.

The Prime Minister (Pavlo Klimkin) is Jewish also. For now at least, the two most powerful positions in Ukraine are held by Jewish politicians.
