It was probably their September 2021 security agreement that convinced Putin to invade. I don't think a full-on invasion had been fully determined before then. Yes, there were troop build-ups well before that event, but they had stopped and IIRC even begun to draw down some of the numbers.

Juin, at this point, it would be just plain foolish and unproductive to bring Zelensky and Putin together. Zelensky has no rights - Putin already knows it - because he's essentially operating off US resented tax dollars that we can't afford. But Zelensky is determined to justify this barbarity. And it can't be justified. His kids, his parents, his spouse or his family are not suffering the consequences of his stupidity. Ukrainian families, on the other hand, are having their men kidnapped and used as cannon fodder, and it's all because of him. He's a despotic parasite that is now terribly upset that he can't prolong this fantasy because reality is setting in. Ukrainians aren't even allowed to vote him out. We need to salvage Ukraine, and the best hope for that is Trump across the table because he knows what needs to be done to keep Ukraine intact as an independent nation

What I want is irrelevant because as you pointed out I have no stake in the fight outside of the fact that if Russia gets away with taking land who among our actual allies might be next and that might get us in a shooting war.
