Former UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown wrecked Tony Blair's dream of becoming President of Europe by provoking a heated row with Nicolas Sarkozy, reveals a book.
The French President was so angry that he refused to take phone calls from Brown. His attitude from that moment on was said to be '**** the Brits'.
Sarkozy later avenged Brown and by grabbing for France a Brussels post that Brown had desperately wanted to fill with a Briton.
I'm not really a fan of Tony Blair, but I regret we didn't get a more popular EU President than ... who? Rompuy? Is that even the guy's name?
The EU wasted a good opportunity to connect with the people by electing such a no-name, rather than a well known experienced politician. Blair had this standing, although he may have been too controversial.
That's a bit off-topic, but I'd prefer it anyway if the EU President was either directly elected by the people, or at least by the EU Parliament -- including a real competition between different candidates with different political stances. Consensus may be efficient, but including the people more is what the EU needs.

And I dont think at this time, that it is a good idea. Maybe in 20+ years, but not now.
I guess Brown did do something for the country and Merci beaucoup, Sarkozy.
Yes, I can't stand democracy either. Power To The Oiks?! I'd rather people who know what they're doing and who are safely pure and untainted rule us too!
What have the Public ever done for us?!

By picking Pompuy they played right into the hands of the Eurosceptics. Then again many Eurosceptics are making fools of themselves these days it seems.
Would need a radical treaty change to make that possible. And I dont think at this time, that it is a good idea. Maybe in 20+ years, but not now.
'**** the Brits'.
