Will schools be safe this fall? Experts weigh in - CNN
"It's really important to get [kids] back into the community," Weingarten told CNN. "For teachers, they miss their kids and they know that the current, remote way of education has its limitations."
I am desperate to be in a room full of students. It is scary to consider any of the options. They all have risks for students, staff, and families.
"Many of the plans to reopen that have been announced so far involve social distancing, PPE, testing, isolation plans, and regular cleaning protocols. Some schools are also exploring hybrid models combining in-person and virtual learning. Such a major shift in how schools run will likely mean more teachers and resources will be needed."
This appears genius and common sense. Logistically, it is terrifying. Try implementing this with thousands of students and all the family needs. Older siblings helping younger siblings get to and from school. What about days off/at home online. The 17 year old hs student being on the same schedule as an 8 year old sibling x 100s of families, not likely.
"In addition to more funding, experts also say all reopening models must include the flexibility for families to make individual decisions based on their own risk assessments. Therefore schools must have a fully online option to accommodate the students, teachers, and family members who are considered high risk and do not want to attend school in person."
Equity is a huge concern when these types of variables are being considered.
Public schools will need patience and support this fall. Not every district will be the same and families will need to consider all the variables before complaining.
We will all have reason to complain but a basic understanding and respect will be necessary for any plan to work.
I really miss my students.
