Link: Why the Gun Control Lobby Hates That More Women Are Buying Guns
...But groups like Everytown’s “The Smoking Gun” project are suddenly clutching their pearls. They’re calling out gun companies for daring to market to women. Their big gripe? That the firearm industry is trying to “normalize” women and guns.
Damn right we are... [emphasis mine]
Including my wife & daughter, I've taught a couple dozen women to shoot (handguns). My typical routine was to start off with a .22 (pistol or revolver) and gradually climb the ladder to more powerful calibers, based on the student's own learning curve & acquired familiarity and skill.
In my admittedly limited experience, I have found it easier to teach women than men. I find them more attentive and less reticent to ask so-called "stupid" questions. Men often get mired in testosterone, and, I think, embarrassment - at not knowing how to shoot - and tend to be harder nuts to crack.
Nearly half the women I taught deliberately chose to be taught by a neutral 3rd party as opposed to their own significant others, the better to avoid any impatience or emotional entanglements - which I find to be quite a mature perspective.
The best part of teaching the girls? The vibe of quiet confidence & self-assuredness they exude after getting comfy with the gun thing. The most memorable was a woman who'd been looking over her shoulder for an abusive ex, and emailed me that after the last of our classes she had her first good night's sleep in about a year and a half. Her gun? A Ruger SP101 loaded with .38 Special+P hollow points. Sucks to be that dude, if he comes calling.
Good times.
