A french rugby legend and all round top bloke can't remember his amazing career.

I apologise if this is paywalled but Sebastien Chabal who was a hero for the French national team now has severe memory problems due to the effects of playing rugby.
I'm sure there are many, many such stories for US football players.

Rugby and football is played by MEN, real MEN, tough MEN. So what if a few of them have head injuries? As long as I git my entertainment, it's all good.

The rules have changed awhile ago making it illegal to head butt or even make a high tackle. It still happens on occasion but as far as possible it is no longer the practice of the game to allow head strikes.
If there is any debate to be had over head strikes it is with soccer where there is discussion on banning head shots with the ball especially in games where children are playing.

Did anyone force him to play?

His choice and he has the money to pay for his own doctors' bills so let him.

No idea about rugby or soccer, but the NFL has already dealt with this situation with their concussion protocol.

Not sure what else they can do.

American football, like many sports, has hazards that simply cannot be completely avoided.

The NFL has minimized concussion as much as possible, but impossible to eliminate the hazard entirely.
