Well this begs the question, what's wrong with everyone being hermaphrodites? Genetic variety could still be maintained.

It is likely that requiring sexual reproduction ensures that their are two parents to raise the child which increases the odds of the child actually making it to adulthood. Another possibility is that the physical changes to the reproduction organs to make sexual selection possible broke the ability to asexually reproduce.
 
Telling someone to go **** themselves wouldn't be nearly as much fun if they would immediately begin doing just that.
