Why do so many Christians act in most un-Christ like manner?

Every Christian has their own God. Every Christian thinks all Christians have the same concept of God.
Every God has the same concept of Right/wrong that matches with each Christains concept of right/wrong.

Don't question it. It works

So give some examples of the words of Jesus himself telling his followers how to act. This must be words from Jesus, not from Paul or anyone else pretending to know what Jesus wants his followers to do.

Jesus own words...

A biggie...

"You hypocrites, Isaiah aptly prophesied about you when he said: This people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far removed from me. It is in vain that they keep worshipping me, for they teach commands of men as doctrines.’” Matthew 15:7-9

Jesus' followers believe the Bible wholeheartedly...

"your word is truth." John 17:17

Jesus' followers honor God's name...

"let your name be sanctified." Matthew 6:9

Along with making God's name known, Jesus followers are in full unity with him and Jehovah God...

"I have made your name known to them and will make it known, so that the love with which you loved me may be in them and I in union with them.” John 17:26

Jesus' followers preach about Jehovah's Kingdom...

I must also declare the good news of the Kingdom of God to other cities, because for this I was sent.”

Jesus' followers remain separate from the wickedness of this world...that includes politics or social conflicts, just as Jesus was...

"They are no part of the world, just as I am no part of the world." John 17:16

My Kingdom is no part of this world. If my Kingdom were part of this world, my attendants would have fought that I should not be handed over to the Jews. But as it is, my Kingdom is not from this source.” John 18:36

True followers of Jesus have intense love for one another...

"I am giving you a new commandment, that you love one another; just as I have loved you, you also love one another. By this all will know that you are my disciples—if you have love among yourselves.” John 13:34,35

Very little of what you presented are the words or actions of Jesus. There are many more examples than the ones you cherry picked to attempt to support your JW beliefs. Jesus said and did some things, according to the story. It seems strange that a Christian as yourself fails to present these.

Either take the Bible at its word or not...it says they are Jesus' words...I believe they are and try to live by them...

You have failed to present anything that shows how Jesus acted and what he taught so you have not answered the question of what it means to be Christ-like.

You are free to point out what I left out...

You are the self proclaimed expert at bible truth and you can’t find anything more? No, I won’t do your work for you. You still have not presented a full profile of the Jesus character from your favorite story book. You have still not shown any evidence of how this character acted and the words he said that tells us what it means to be Christ-like.

If a jesus like figure existed today how would he be treated.

Most likely he would be deemed mentally ill and prescribed psychotropic drugs.

2000 years ago people were incredibly superstitious, mythical, irrational.

And yet 2000 years later we have people who buy into the faith of magic, its not sad, its funny.

God, guns and money is what they worship.

Thanks to capitalism, they want it all and they want it now. Instant gratification is the rage.

A sad petty culture prevails.

So stingy, so selfish, so impatient, such a lack of compassion only rivaled by their lack of true patriotism.

American Christians on the whole would rather be infotained than informed, win the lottery rather than work for success.

They are soft, out of shape, over indulged, do not eat in a healthy way, do not exercise enough to stay fit.

And they do not get enough sleep. Overworked and placated with violent entertainment. So many movies feature violent revenge and sick depravity that it is hard to find a wholesome show to watch. They are rare.

In America it is no big surprise to encounter a loud modified exhaust on an overpriced gas guzzling lifted pickup truck with fake genitals hanging from the bumper and a disrespected American flag dragging over a dirty tailgate in total violation of US flag code, and a bumper sticker about 'loving Jesus and guns' on the back.

I am not surprised 'Christians' act so un-Christ like.

lol...nice dodge but no cigar...

lol...nice dodge but no cigar...

You are the one dodging, as is everyone else in this thread. Unless it can be shown what it means to be Christ-like, we can’t show if any Christians act un-Christ like. And the only way to do this is to first present evidence of how Christ acted, which no one has done yet.

Wrong...I gave you Jesus' own words as recorded in the Bible...that is what a Christian's life should be based on...any person who tells you they are a Christian but they are not interested in living according to Jesus' own words, is a liar...

"If you keep my commands, remain in my love you will, as I have kept my Father’s commands and am remaining in his love." John 15:10

You gave nothing that showed how Christ acted and so little of his words that you did not describe in any details what he taught. You did not quote any of his commands so how are we to know what his commands were?

What a load of liberal horse manure. And you sound like you're not big on capitalism so, by default, socialism must be the answer. Socialism is a black market for toilet paper. In addition, progressives aren't really progressive. They're regressive, all the way back to Sodom and Gomorrah.

Also, I thought of this while reading your rant:

Not unexpected from a man who claims he is an observant Christian, while almost every comment he posts says otherwise.

Acting in un-Christ like ways.

#1 Public prayers for themselves and demanding that everyone at a public meeting "bow their heads and pray to our God".

What did Jesus [supposedly] say about praying in public?

<facepalm>

Your twisted, antichrist theology, if taken seriously by those you might mentor, will send them to Hell in a handbasket. Very chic.

Assumption incorrect. Missed by a mile. Absurd reply indicates a general lack of Christian values found in the Bible.

There is no need to choose between capitalism and socialism. The two work very well together side by side. Been that way in the USA for nearly a hundred years, and also in most industrialized nations on Earth. Jesus was a socialist, totally into sharing the wealth. This comes to mind: It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get into heaven.

It is not possible to worship wealth or capitalism and be a true Christian. It would be easier for an elephant to pass through the eye of a needle than to do that.

The non-snarky answer is that Christianity is not for most people. It's a difficult behavioral standard, as its prescriptions and prohibitions run counter to basic survival instincts, familial loyalty and primate tendency to form classes and in-groups.

That's why the people most faithful to its sense of practice are monastics, Cathars and ecclesiastics.

Why do so many American Christians act in most un-Christ manner? Please note that I am not an absolutist, unlike some who comment on DP. I know some good Christians, even a couple of ministers and a Catholic priest, who I think do the best they can in these trying times, as do many who believe in the Christ. Sadly, the loudest voices are too often the ones who provide the worst examples and the easiest targets for those who are not Christian.

Another Bible lesson from a non-believer:
Mark 10 [NASB '95] 21 Looking at him, Jesus felt a love for him and said to him, “One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” 22 But at these words he was saddened, and he went away grieving, for he was one who owned much property.

[NRSV] 21 Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, “You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” 22 When he heard this, he was shocked and went away grieving, for he had many possessions.

[1599 Geneva] 21 And Jesus looked upon him, and loved him, and said unto him, One thing is lacking unto thee. Go and sell all that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven, and come, follow me, and take up the cross. 22 But he was sad at that saying, and went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.

Matthew 19 [NASB '95] 21 Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be complete, go and sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” 22 But when the young man heard this statement, he went away grieving; for he was one who owned much property.

[NRSV] 21 Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.” 22 When the young man heard this word, he went away grieving, for he had many possessions.

[1599 Geneva] 21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go, sell that thou hast, and give it to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven, and come, and follow me. 22 And when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.

Luke 18 [KJV] 18 And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
19 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, that is, God.
20 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honour thy father and thy mother.
21 And he said, All these have I kept from my youth up.
22 Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.
23 And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich.
24 And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!

Jesus was a socialist, totally into sharing the wealth.

"Jesus was not a socialist. Socialism is an economic system in which the means of production are owned by the collective. Jesus never once addressed the means of production or the collective. Calling Jesus a socialist is like calling Julius Caesar a hacker. Charity is not socialism. Sharing is not socialism. Being nice to your fellow man is not socialism. Care for the poor is not socialism. Healthcare is not socialism. Those misconceptions are derived from confusion over what socialism is (ownership of the means of production by the collective) with what socialism claims to provide (charity, redistribution of wealth, equality, etc.)."

It is not possible to worship wealth or capitalism and be a true Christian. It would be easier for an elephant to pass through the eye of a needle than to do that.

To be clear, one can be wealthy and also a Christian, understanding money is not to be worshiped. God blesses individual with wealth a number of times in the Bible - Solomon, Job, Abraham, etc. What Jesus never taught was forced redistribution of wealth, which is, at its core, a radical left wing economic scheme centered in greed and covetousness for other people’s money, rather than exercising personal responsibility and initiative and earning it one’s self.

"It is America’s men and women of wealth, imbued with religious and civic responsibility, who have served as the greatest patrons of the civic infrastructure, be it hospitals, libraries, museums, the arts, or the charitable United Way. England once had those patrons, but they went away as redistribution of wealth came in." And although giving and charity are commanded by the Lord, nowhere in the Bible does it say that giving must first be filtered through a bloated and inefficient government bureaucracy. The Bible says that a man shall reap what he sows, but it doesn’t say we should live off of what other people sow to the extent that everyone becomes equally disadvantaged." - http://righterreport.com/2011/10/08/obama-vs-the-bible-redistribution-of-wealth/

answer by Reuben Woodruff, MA from King's College London

When I was a kid in a Catholic school, our history teacher, who was a fan of Sen McCarthy, told us the problem with all the attacks on Communists back in the day was simply that people equated Marxist Communism with true communism. My teacher, a nun, told us that she and her fellow sisters were true communists as none of them owned anything and shared everything needed to live. Those of her religious order and others were communists using a lowercase letter 'c'. The people others thought of when they heard the word communist, should always be labeled with a capital letter 'C' for they were not really communists, instead they used the term to mislead the gullible. One group were religious and focused on a simple track thru life while the others were simply authoritarians using a fake label.

The Bible quote about reaping what you sow has absolutely nothing to do with becoming wealthy by working hard. It is a moral lesson that you will reap what your behavior sows. So if you pursue wealth, that is what you will reap, rather than the salvation of your soul, which comes from doing good works. None of this has anything to do with coveting other peoples wealth.
