As far as effectiveness goes, I have to say Richard Nixon. Vision wise I like Kennedy, however because of his premature death I can't honestly state him as our best. For example his handling of the failure of the Bay Of Pigs Invasion.

I think JFK because he realized the roots of all evil in this country. It cost him his life.
 
I think it was Ronald Regan because he had good economic policies and he did most of the stuff that led to the end of the Cold War and the fall of the USSR.
 
"Best" is very subjective. Are we to judge by legislative accomplishments during their terms in office? By their character? By the economy during their tenure?

hah yeah JFK my posterior, The failed Bay of Pigs invasion nearly caused a nooclear exchange during the Cuban missile crisis.
 
You may want to check the spelling of Reagan. Even Cheney stated that 'Reagan proved that deficits didn't matter". We now have a 17 trillion Total Accumulated Debt that proves different.

I fully agree that actions of Ronald Reagan helped bring an end to the Soviet Union. For example his speech at the Berlin Wall and the arms race of the 1980's. Though I feel that far too much of the credit goes to Ronald Reagan himself. Reagan himself was a laid back executive. His cabinet is where all the works of his administration came from, Gipper was effectively just the "Okay-guy".

I always forget the 'a'. We wouldn't need to worry about our deficit if the liberals would just let us drill for oil in America instead of having to rely on arabs for it. Obama, your response...

Bay of Pigs was initiated by Dwight D. Eisenhower. Not to mention Bay of Pigs didn't really have to do with the Cuban Missile Crisis directly, it was really just a worse turn of US-Cuban/Soviet Bloc relations.

Isn't domestic drilling is at an all-time high. And I believe you can thank Jimmy Carter for that initiative.

Drill for oil is loon talk. There is plenty of oil shale. The Soviet economy wasn't the only one destroyed by our spending on Star wars and such. Aren't you glad we're destroying those weapons now? C. Christie is coming to the rescue of the GOP, especially with the splitting of the loon vote.

I liked IKE. So do the OTR truckers who benefit from his interstates. Too bad today's loons don't see it that way. When did IKE involve us in Vietnam? Foreign policy is not to be politicized by True Patriots.

was a strong leader who inspired people, but tragically was killed just three years into his presidency. He faced down the Soviets during the Cuban Missile crisis. I really can't see any of the rest of them pulling that off, other than perhaps Reagan.

finally got us out of Vietnam, but left behind a mess, much as our later withdrawal from Iraq has left a mess. He signed into law the EPA. No more rivers have caught fire since then.
If he hadn't tried to cover up that burglary, he might have been a great president. Unfortunately, Watergate seems to be his legacy.

had the bad luck to be president during the OPEC oil crisis. Carter was a decent man, perhaps too kind to be good at the nasty world of politics.

Credited with a lot of things that he didn't really do, like winning the cold war. Reagan was another man able to inspire people to greatness. If only he had been successful at decreasing the size of the federal government, if he had put a stop to Iran Contra before it started, he might have been a great president. Some people think he was anyway, but they just don't remember.

did a decent job, didn't get us involved in a lengthy war in the ME despite Saddam's invasion of Kuwait, and might have accomplished more had he been reelected. I never did understand why he wasn't. \

did an adequate job, but a great president? the best of the 10? Somehow, I just don't see it. It would have helped had he kept his pecker in his pants.

OMG! Surely no one will pick the guy who got us into Iraq and Afganistan and put the war on the national MasterCard. I never forgave him for that. Otherwise, he was OK.

Might have been an excellent president had he had some experience. Had he done anything of note before being elected, and if the opposition party had had some goal other than making him a one term president, he might have accomplished something. Were he able to reach across the aisle and get people to make compromises, in other words, if he had a bit more experience, he might have done a good job. As it is, however, the biggest surprise was his reelection.

I'd have to say John Kennedy was the best of the lot.
 
With Clinton we had both peace and prosperity. Its hard to beat that combination.

1954, right after Ho Chi Minh won his country's independence from the French. It was Johnson who really blew it up into a full scale war, however.

Yes, the interstate highway system is what he deserves to have as his legacy, no doubt, that and the greatest economic boom we've ever had.

I will gladly take the eight years of peace and prosperity that the nation had under Clinton again and again and again.
