Trump talks tariffs. The EU talks free trade with the rest of the world.

The EU has several FTAs with various countries. Some of them are broad, and some of them are only for selected goods. Each trade deal is sensitive, both parts usually wants some goods to be extempt from the deal to keep protecting their market. There are usually disagreements about whose standards to follow. There are also disagreements on how trade disputes should be handled. And disagreements about what reasonable tariff levels from extempt goods should be. Sometimes these deals fail to materialize. Some times a trade deal doesn't have to be an FTA, but a deal regarding the level of tariffs (meaning both partners agree to lower tariffs on some goods, intead of a free trade agreement). Some times a third country can negotiate access to the common market (like Norway) or membership in the Customs Union (like Turkey). The EU has been aggressive in it's pursuit of FTAs, but always failed to get one with the US, because the US want the EU to drop standards and safety regulations, which the EU always refuses (and are not subject to the trade negotiation mandate the Commission has, since only the EU Parliament can do this). While Trump just talk about raising barriers, the EU is all about dropping them.

Donald Trump is literally the worst business person I've ever watched.

Welcome to the party.

Love,
Canada.

It won't be enough to make up for the EU's loss of access to the US consumer market.

The US attitude to food safety is pretty much the reverse of the rest of the wealthy world. Where the US prioritises 'cheap', the rest of the wealthy world prioritises safety. For instance, US beef gets pumped full of artificial growth hormones (and antibiotics?), while the countries the US wants to export to use hormones ether a lot less, or have them banned. Food additives are another example where the US often uses additives that have been banned in other countries over safety issues. Trumps argument is that all those other countries should just lower their food safety standards to match those of the country with the lowest life expectancy, and highest healthcare bill, in the wealthy world. You can see why the rest of the world are leary about importing US produced foods.

Wish Canada would join an EU free trade agreement. I would even sign a free trade agreement with China.

Why do you so often post in these threads saying that you are happy so long as someone else is being harmed. It's a constant 'thread' within your posts about trade. It seems that so long as you believe some other country is going to suffer from Trumps insanity, you are just fine with more insanity????

There is a FTA between Canada and the EU.

Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement

Has existed since 2017.
Though it has only been "provisionally applied", since I think a few EU members never ratified it, but basically it's in force.

The one good thing to come out of this tariff idiocy is to open other countries eyes to lessening trade with the US and expanding trade with others.
