Which wines do you remember as commendable?

Back in the day when I still drank alcohol...when I lived in Germany...I was partial to a good, medium-sweet Spätlese Riesling.

So many years ago, Boone's Farm. Or some name like that. Cheap, but after a few glasses the taste is no longer important. Not even sure if that is still around. And you sure won't find it served at any high class dinner event. But that was way-way back when that was a wine of choice, even for folks who had extra money in their pocket.

Well, university then military.

We have some fine rice wines here in Japan. Some super expensive ones, too.

But after my cancer treatment was started my alcohol days were finished and likely never to return.

But I still remember Boone's Farm. if that spelling is correct.

Oh yes, I remember now; in movies I have seen this thing of swishing wine around in your mouth and then spitting it out. Horrible waste of alcohol. Should be illegal. Or is that just a movie thing?

Back in the day, when my ex and I had a wine cellar, my favorite big reds, ones that I could "lay down", were a Cabaret Sauvignon by a small California vintner Freemark Abbey, and some long legged red Zinfandels by Ridge Vinyards, and Nalle winery from the Lytton Springs properties.

My favorite Bourdeaux was always Ch. La Mission Haut-Brion, but I can't afford it now in my retirement.

When I became single, I all but stopped buying wine entirely, because I don't drink alone. When we were together, a bottle of wine could always comfortably be finished in an evening if we chose to. I hate opening a bottle, not finishing it, and drinking it a day(s) later when it is never quite as good.

Most recently, since I lost my sense of smell, I rarely even buy wine when I'm dining out or at a bar.

A good Brunello- I’ve got several brought back from my trip to Tuscany three years ago, just waiting to be opened when I retire sometime by the end of the decade.

We used to love a cold bottle of Gewürztraminer with Asian food. Somehow the usual reds and whites couldn't pair quite as well with it - not even the sparkling wines.

As for the red sorts I like best the Spätburgunder … Pinot Noir in French
