But in a last-minute flurry, Republicans abruptly pulled their backing with no explanation and ultimately killed the measure, leaving its fate unclear, many of its champions livid and some of its newfound opponents professing ignorance about what had happened.
Asked what made him vote against a measure that he had co-sponsored, Representative Vern Buchanan, Republican of Florida, was brief and blunt: “I don’t know,” he said. [. . .] In other words, the Republicans in the House killed a bill that would honor a true pathfinder because, as a judge, he enforced the First Amendment. They did so in order to mollify the same idiot rookie who referred to the January 6 insurrectionists as an “ordinary tourist group.”
Sadly so many in the gop now support such aberrant behavior, don't know why you voted against the bill? I do, because too many inside the gop are hate filled people, plain and simple. The point is to be cruel, these people are getting too uppity. The gop under trump has taught me to despise republican politics. This election is going to be nothing more than the continuation of what trump started. How can it be anything other when someone like DeSantis, a trump clone, looks to be the gop favorite for the next election.Charles P Pierce does have a way with words, especially so when he calls out the - shall I say, dickish behaviour of certain politicians.
When You're a Colossal Dick for the Sake of Being a Colossal Dick
House Republicans torpedoed a measure to honor a trailblazing Black judge in Florida because he once enforced the First Amendment.
One of the more under-examined facets of the modern American conservative movement is the tactic of being a colossal dick simply for the sake of being a colossal dick. (Some experts trace this phenomenon back to former Senator Rick Santorum.) The energy behind this tactic is very often the inherent structural racism that has charged American conservative politics ever since it allied itself with the remnants of American apartheid in the mid-1960s. It has been a long march, but recent events have made clear that the time of those remnants has come around at last. So American conservatives can be colossal dicks just to be colossal dicks.
On Tuesday, a proposal seemed to be sailing through the House of Representatives that would name a Florida federal courthouse after Joseph Hatchett, the first Black man to serve on that state’s supreme court. The measure was supported by the entire Florida congressional delegation, and it is the kind of legislation that House members don’t even have to be fully awake to support. But this is 2022, and there is absolutely nothing normal about the House Republican caucus. From the New York Times:

Yea, and whenever I see "I'd bet there is more to the story" I'd bet the person making that comment has no idea if there is more to the story, but simply doesn't like the story so they claim there must be more.Whenever I see a "just because. . ." story I'd bet there is way more to the story.
Lemonwax, your attempts to get it on the conversational action are always lacking. You probably think you're funny. You're not.I feel for Justice Joseph Hatchett for possibly not having a courthouse named after him Too bad, so sad that's how race politics goes. You win a few, you lose a few.
Are you just now finding out that congress votes on lots of different things, including the naming of places? But I can see why you would completely sidestep what the republicans did.Why is this something Congress should be spending time on in the first place?
No, I think it’s stupid that the House is only in session for 112 days and they’re spending calories trying to figure out what to name a courthouse in Florida. Here’s an idea. They should call it Federal Courthouse and move on to what they were actually elected to do. You have a right to your opinion - not matter how silly it is.Yea, and whenever I see "I'd bet there is more to the story" I'd bet the person making that comment has no idea if there is more to the story, but simply doesn't like the story so they claim there must be more.
Start a thread. This thread is about the dickish behavior of you people. The thread is about progressive wines about something nobody was elected to spend time on in the first place. Stop pretending you care what a courthouse in Florida is named. You people would burn it down anyway given the chance.Start a thread. This thread is about the dickish behavior of you people. But avoiding the topic is your best bet.
He needs dental work.here is the judge...
here is the guy that sabotaged it at the last second...

You should probably stop while you are behind. No argument with that, but it really doesn't have any bearing on the primary issue of how and why some right wing stooge could torpedo an otherwise simple building naming resolution based upon being butt hurt about a 25 year old decision he disagreed with.Every courthouse should be named, The People's Courthouse of (Name of city, town, or county).
We need to stop with the hero worship altogether. No statues, no named federal or state buildings.
