The left wants white America to see itself as profoundly culpable, as the bad guy in the drama. . . .
It's time to admit and grapple with the fact that all of America will never be, as it were, PC in the sense cherished in liberal college towns. All of America will never see the present through the lens of the past, and will never entirely shed a tendency to stereotype.
The left is seeking a vision of human empathy, historical awareness, and even concentration, that would be achievable only via submitting all citizens to a rigorous mental training akin to what we all recall from "The Karate Kid" -- or even "1984." The time comes when it's time to admit that it ain't gonna happen.

I think the left really needs to ditch the tiring PC/identity politics nonsense, if we are ever going to be able to re-coup our losses in the years to come.
...we cannot make more than a hyper-educated sliver of white Americans see those facts as justifying a contemptuous view of themselves, or as justifying submitting black people to different standards of morality and expectation. How do I know? Donald Trump is our next president. We need new tactics.

The left needs to learn that there is no shortcut to winning the argument in The Arena For The Combat Of Ideas. This program of using force to shut up those who dont agree only goes to prove the Lefts lack of fidelity to reason as well as a predisposition towards playing the part of abuser....which I claim proves moral inferiority.
"Might makes Right" and "The ends justify the means" must both be repudiated by the Left before they can be allowed into power again.
They currently do not uphold American values, and they are dangerous. The D's choosing to run a coronation for Clinton Corp rather than a Primary is what one gets when such immorality is not dealt with.

No he won't. This is the kind of myopic drivel CNN likes to put out there. They call this crap "fair and balanced".
The problem, as Mr. McWhorter contends, is not that the left needs to alter their tactics to make white people understand how racist they are, lest they elect that "racist and bigoted" Mr. Trump in response. It is, that the left is STILL stuck in the "us vs them" mentality that they've used for decades to marginalize, minimize and silence a BIG portion of our citizenry. That mentality is what finally induced that silenced group into speaking out...with their votes.
No. The left needs to change their mindset and come up with positions that appeal to ALL Americans. Kind of like what Trump did.
That, and the quality of their ideas.Interesting article.
I've never supported the politics of diversity; the idea that being different is innately virtuous and deserving of special consideration rather than simply being a fact of life.
There are too many isms, too many labels people have been using to either denigrate and dismiss others, or elevate and claim privileges for themselves.
All this does is perpetuate the things that cause us to avoid each other, and divide us as a people.
I want us to try to adhere to the principal of not judging someone by the color of their skin (or their age, sex, sexual identity, etc.) but rather on the content of their character.
As a corollary, to not ask what others (or one's country) can do for you, but what you can do for others or one's country.
Be proud of your accomplishments as an individual; but don't demand praise, recognition, or special consideration for just being who you are.
That's how I see it anyway. :twocents:

That article is condescending bull****. He isn't actually saying that the left is wrong as much as he is saying white people will always be bigoted. The only thing he is suggesting he learned is that the lefts tactics to fight it will never work because white people just suck too much.

In an America we can actually expect healing in, it will not be "woke" to assail a white man wearing dreadlocks, or a gay white man adopting some slang expressions and gestures of black women, as committing the sin of cultural appropriation.
It will not be "woke" to call for reparations for abuses of black people committed eons ago, hoping that whites will cherish black Americans as human history's only people whose legacy permanently cripples them in the present.
It will not be "woke" for the media to treat the video of a white man nearly killed by black men as any less of a racially charged incident in the wake of Trump's victory, as if black people carry some kind of immunity...
It will not be "woke" to pillory people as racists for passingly infelicitous gestures, such as referring to black people as "colored people" (like Good Morning America's Amy Robach did last summer), or photoshopping themselves riding on the back of a black athlete in praise of their accomplishment (Ellen DeGeneres and Usain Bolt)...
I read it this morning. Typical liberal pretentious, smug, douchbaggery in the guise of reasonableness and wisdom.
https://newrepublic.com/article/138996/liberal-response-trump-devolving-outrage-pornWhen we play the outrage game, we are playing on Trump’s turf—and he has already proven to be master of this game. Opposition to Trump should focus far more on opposition to his policies, decisions, and judgment, rather than on calling him out for his every remark or relying on funny but ineffective memes to make our point. While they might make us feel better in the short term, the benefits of feeling intellectually and morally superior to the man who just defied all polls and pundits to become the president-elect of the United States will certainly prove ephemeral.
Better if we defeat Trump on the issues. Force him to defend his ideas and policies. The less attention paid to his Twitter feed, the better. We don’t have to reiterate to ourselves or to the rest of the world why Trump is unacceptable. Far better if we stand up to him by defending our values of decency, honesty, and equality. Far better, when his policy proposals seem at odds with his promises and will likely betray the very people who voted for him, that we point out these inconsistencies vociferously. We have to make the positive case for change from here forward.

Do you think he is atheist? Do you think he has ever complained about religious people saying he is going to hell for something? I wonder if he ever considered that PC tactics are really no different than the religious guy saying someone is going to hell. What people have a tendency to do is to believe their morality is objectively true and that whatever conclusions they have reached everyone must agree with. That wouldn't be a problem in of itself if they just kept their little issue to themselves, but they feel it is their place to play moral supreme commander of the universe and start throwing it around in the most annoying way imaginable.
I don't know if I'm convinced that PC run amok is the reason Trump got elected. It certainly was a big factor, but he also had a very strong populist message. I think it was a combination of both of those things. The democratic party would have done better if they had focused on policy. It would be hard to imagine seeing a state like Michigan flip if it was trickle down economics vs a more progressive tax system.
Huh?
I think most of us know what PC run amok is. The three or four points I quoted above are a good start.
It's the same thing. The guy that runs around saying everyone is a sinner is really no different than the guy running around calling everyone is a racist. They're both doing it because they feel their morality is objectively true and they're both believe everyone has to live by their beliefs.
Thread title and the article is about PC running Amok, not that we should just say whatever the hell we want and **** on people along the way.
