What other Democratic Governor could pull off what Newsome is doing?

I'm not a big Newsom fan but I applaud him for taking it to Trump head on. I'm sure his tweets have been making the cankles swell. I think Newsome can pull this off because he is young, handsome and charismatic. He also has a sense of humor. Trump hates anyone that actually appears more virile than he does (which leaves the field wide open).

Democrats need to come out swinging, but what other Democratic Governor could pull this off? I'm just thinking of some of the major cities.

Perhaps JB Pritzger? Not Kathy Hochul. Not Gretchen Whitmer. Perhaps Josh Shapiro?

Don't get me wrong. We have some strong Democratic governors that serve their constituencies well, but how many can go toe-to-toe with Trump and succeed?

Thoughts?

Jerry Brown also had some choice words for DJT during his first term when their times in office overlapped, 2017-2018.
 
Were I a paid Democratic consultant, my advice to those paying me would be "don't take the cheese." Standing up to Trump isn't going to matter much in November, 2028.
 
California is a very powerful state and so solidly blue the governor needn't fear blowback.

Though it's fun to watch Newsom needling Trump, the reason he's ramping it up now (in addition being given an easy target to record to) is to position himself early for a 2028 presidential run as the anti-Trump.

A lot of opposition campaigning is based on being the "antidote" to the incumbent, whether that's the party or the individual or even whether term is expiring or they're handing over to a successor.

This is one of the factors that helped Trump in 2016 and 2024. It helped Bush in 2000 and Obama in 2008. I'd say in 2020 was probably more impacted by external factors like the pandemic.

But back to Newsom, yeah he's building his national brand early.

I am not a big Newsom guy, but he hasn't done anything I did not like. I don't have great hopes for his plan to revisit the California redistricting committee, but I sure support the effort. If they cheat, we have to cheat too if only to stop them from cheating even more. We can't ever take the House if we don't meet the constantly moving goalposts gerrymandering requires.
 
Newsome is absolutely right about Republican redistricting in Texas.

Texas and other GOP-controlled states such as Florida and Missouri will attempt to redistrict their congressional state maps to hold onto the House in the 2026 midterm election.

Miss the days when Biden would walk purposefully off the stage at the wrong time and in the wrong direction?

Standing up to him now is when we need it. If it can influence the mid-terms and have the dems come out on top, we can end Trump's presidency 2 years early.

If you have read any of Newsom's recent SM posts, the concentration is on the mid-terms. That's how all this started with Texas announcing they were going to cheat.

November 2028 will be entirely about Trump's second term in office. If the country is unhappy with Trump, the GOP will lose, and lose bad, regardless of who they nominate.

I found him to be disingenuous when CA was in lockdown due to Covid and he was dining with his buddies at Thomas Keller's restaurant. Not nearly anything as crooked as a Maga would do but I hold him to a higher standard.

Attending the birthday dinner was a stupid move by Newsom, but he had previously acted proactively for Californians during Covid.

The broken respirators that DJT so graciously sent CA were immediately sent for repairs, and in the face of the pitiful number supplied for the state’s population, new sources were located and additional purchases made. Newsom also spearheaded the creation of a consortium of West Coast states to purchase more necessary PPE for healthcare workers.

Many Californians expected that our state would bear the brunt of the coming epidemic/pandemic given the many business, travel and family ties with China. Not to mention the amount of Chinese goods coming through the Port of Los Angeles on Chinese vessels. Newsom’s actions, including shelter in place orders, gave some reassurance that CA government was taking the Covid threat very seriously.

As it turned out, a mutation occurred rendering the Covid virus even more deadly, and it arrived in Europe — specifically Italy — first, and from there NYC and the East Coast.
 
Thanks for the clarification. I do remember what he did for California when Orange Jesus refused to help. Newsome spoke at a Black Tie event in Dallas that I attended when he was Mayor of San Francisco. He was impressive and I knew he was destined for bigger and better things. When I heard about the French Laundry dinner I just thought he had turned into another "do as I say, not as I do" politician, but yes, everyone makes stupid mistakes.
 

Newsom certainly has a bit of the Governor Good Hair vibe (Molly Ivins’ name for TX Gov Rick Perry — appearance over substance), but he does have the brains for decent governing.
