What would you do with the money?
To what charities would you contribute? Would you start one of your own?
Would you buy a big old house? Where?
Would you buy a hot new car? Which one or ones?
What else would you do with the money?

I would go around the country seeding scholarships for degrees and vocational training at small public schools, community colleges, universities, and training centers. And, I would do this anonymously, without publicity or fanfare. I believe that education is the key to breaking the chains of poverty.

I would also fund literacy programs internationally in third world countries. Again, I believe education, particularly of girls and women, is the key to overcoming many of the world's problems.

I'd take the lump sum. Then I'd set up maximum tax-free gifts to annually give $ to those important to me.

My favorite charities are my local food bank, 4Ocean, and the ACLU. I don't think I would increase my charity giving dramatically.

I think I would just pay off my current house, fix everything that needs fixing and start booking short-term housing at all the places I want to visit. Right now my most desired vacation locations are all in the US. I've seen a bunch, but not enough.

I would probably buy more than one car, but I don't think I'd buy new ones.

That's a good question. I can say one thing but honestly, I don't know.

Nice cars! I like the big ole red Cadillac convertible!

I would buy DP off of Schweddy, ban everyone who says bad things about me, and change its name to X Richard Nixon's Festering Corpse.

I would first split it up between my family members.

Then I would do like the rest of you have said--donate to charities, etc.

Then I might finally get that leaky faucet in the bathroom fixed.

( :) )
Yeah, I'd spend the money leftover from the DP purchase divided evenly between wild women and just wasting the rest.

Id take a lump sump, invest in a varied stable portfolio, and set up a faceless trust to hide.

There are some medical charities, parkland, education, and some arts that I would support.

I'd love to have a few aces where I would have the gardens and a greenhouse to play and possibly breed roses. A large Greek revival farmhouse with a cook's kitchen. maybe 3 bedrooms.

I'd go crazy redoing my wardrobe and shoes. There are a lot of cars I like but I'm not sure how many i would want to own and put up with on a daily basis. Maybe 2-3.

1) If payment can be continued after death I would set up a trust for the receiving and administration of the funds for however long that maybe. If this cannot be done and I can only receive them during my life time then lump sum.
I have a BIL that I would help support his business....I would purchase equipment needed but set up a relationship for him with a business advisor as he is not well organized and tends to cut corners where he shouldn't but he is a good man.

2) Wife and I would make a joint decision on charities. I would like to setup a musical scholarship for my high school music department. I get a lot of joy from music and it was instrumental in my developing teen years.

3) I would be tempted to move somewhere coastal, perhaps outside the US. A dual purpose fishing boat/scuba dive boat would be a consideration. Maybe set it up as a business with someone else operating it but have an "Admirals Cabin" on board when I want to go out. I like meeting new people that share an interest in these things.

4) Two vehicles.....one a sporting convertible.....the other an all original restored pickup from the 30's-50's maybe.

Set up my kids up for life but with an administrator to prevent them from self destructing, I have witnessed that first hand. I want grandkids but so far none on the horizon...maybe give it all the the first one that makes me a grandparent.....

I don't need a big house and a fancy car. I would buy as much land as I could and build an animal sanctuary, complete with a small veterinary hospital. A safe place for all abused, unwanted, and homeless animals to live out their lives in peace and comfort.

I’d take care of family members including purchasing homes for them, establishing guaranteed incomes, taking care of future medical needs, etc.

Set up a scholarship fund at UC Merced in honor of my late niece.

Funds for my favorite charities and causes.

Admit defeat and hire someone to organize the garage, including hand tools, and possibly someone to cure me of compulsively saving every screw — wood and machine — that I come across. And convince me that one person doesn’t really need two electric variable-speed drills.

There is no chance whatsoever that I could win a big lottery...but this is an interesting thread...and I have enjoyed listening to what people would do with big money if it just fell in their lap.

I suspect big money coming that way would bring more turmoil and unhappiness than most people realize.

Do you follow Lee Asher from The Asher House?

Not really, he does amazing work rescuing dogs, if I could I would take in all animals that need help, rehabilitation and a secure safe living environment.

No monies for charities. Way too much waste.
I'd buy a brownstone in Brooklyn Heights or Cobble Hill, Brooklyn (the nicest part of Brooklyn) or a Condo in a classic Building in Manhattan, like the Woolworth Building. Also, a classic Victorian about 140 years old someplace in the country.
Car? I'd get rid of my car as when I lived full time in NYC. The only thing worse than a car is a pet like a dog or cat.

What else? Season tickets to the Opera and Carnegie Hall. Memberships to MOMA, the MET, the Whitney and the Guggenheim.
They I'd attend countless performances at the Joyce (modern dance) and Broadway. You know what, throw in season tickets to the Nets.

And yeah, I'd give my kids a lump of cash each even if I had to forgo the brownstone and just get an apartment in Washington Heights.
They could all have a key to the grand Victorian in the country to come and go as they please.

Did I forget anything? Only that I'd eat in the best resultants. But, of course I always did. Just not as often as I would if I won.

another excellent idea although I'd what a sharp young women, half my age on my arm, not wild but very attractive.
They have to know how to dress and conduct themselves.

I'm happy as a clam in high tide as things are right now without a windfall................ but I would pay off the mortgages and bills of every family member.

The wife and I already contribute to a 1/2 dozen charities but I would increase the amounts.

Blasphemy..........
right? One that's battery powered, and an electric one for back up, makes sense to me! In the days before Amazon, I once bought 5 Dremels (did not need them) because they came with diamond bits I used to drill into stained glass, and I couldn't find them locally. LOVE my power tools!

I have no need for money. So I would give it all to worthy charities. None which are conservative run.

I think so as well.

Some people like myself appreciate a cold beer and a fun conversation with the wife after a long day.................. with some jimmy Buffet playing in the background

Life doesn't work well going mach II all the time with spending and carrying on.

History shows you to be correct.
"According to the National Endowment for Financial Education, 70% of lottery winners go bankrupt within a few years. Obtaining more money often leads to careless spending and the desire to get more money, and the greed can be destructive to the lives of winners and their families."

If I won $10,000,000:

1. Put away one million in a savings account.

a. I am 86. During the time I have left, financial security would be nice.

2. One million to legitimate dog rescue groups.

3. One million to planned parenthood.

4. One million to that organization that pays off mortgages for families of 9/11 victims and families of disabled soldiers and slain police officers.

5. One million to help President Trump pay for his legal obligations.

6. One million for that hospital that offers free medical care to children and free accommodations to their families.

7. One million for children to attend private school instead of their dysfunctional public school.

8. One million for research into Parkinson's and dementia.

9. One million for armed security guards on all Los Angeles buses and subway cars.

10. One million as reparations for victims (or their families) of violent criminals.
