At the Italian Bishops' Conference, the pope reportedly said gay men should not be allowed to train for the priesthood, adding there was already an air of frociaggine, which translates as a highly offensive slur.
The word frociaggne is a pejorative in the italian language. It is the italian translation of the english word faggot. ( and not meaning bits of wood)

The atheist side of me takes that to mean that the pope thinks the vatican is already a bit to gay already. Mind you he was wearing a dress when he said that.
Where as the religious side of me is still struggling to find a nice spin to this. Anyone got an idea?

Even more accurately, “faggotry”.

There’s only one explanation; the Pope is secretly queer.

He is a good man. Maybe that's what counts. His reputation as a humble and simple man goes back decades and was attested to when he became Pope.

Catholics are a strange religion. I grew up in the Catholic Church and there's a lot of weird super natural politics, and scandals there.

As an adult, I don't really do the super natural thing anymore, and I think the Pope is nothing more than the King of Catholics.

The full quote in context is even funnier. It translates to something like, “there’s enough faggotry in the clergy already” when discussing if homosexual priests should be allowed.

Overall, he’s the most progressive Pope probably in history. Plus I’ve never seen anything that makes me think he’s actually hateful, even if he doesn’t think gay men should be in the clergy.

I don’t actually hold this against him that much. I care way more about actions than words.

We try to imagine the Pope more than what he probably is. If you look too closely at the man you may miss the rapture and ecstasy. I felt it more as post toddler. The sounds, the pageantry, the lights reflecting on the chalice, the host lifted high.... It was like transportation to some parallel realm. It weakened as I grew older.

But I do love the Church

It could have been worse. he could have said here are far to many children wandering around the halls.

I think there are many gay men already among the Priesthood. They can try to ban it all they want, considering Catholic priests are supposed to be celibate (but we know quite a few aren't) it should hardly makes much difference.

My goodness, some folks seem to be sort of living in some Hollywood world:

"Unfortunately, even if intended as a joke, the Pope's comment reveals the depth of anti-gay bias and institutional discrimination that still exist in our church," she told Reuters news agency.

Of course, there is a strong anti-gay attitude amongst a very large bunch of Catholic folks, be it the leaders, or the followers. That has been the case for centuries.

What I would very much like to know is just who let that chicken out of the coop. I'd bet Pope Francis has already gotten his detective folks working on that one. Some Vatican Sherlock Holmes to work.

EDIT: Sorry, forgot to post the key point; it was no joke. Pope Francis was serious.

I don't think he is against gay men in the clergy. I believe if you read his statements and his follow-up, he believes gay people are already well-represented in the clergy. And as you have stated, I believe he is attempting to move the church back to the core teachings and actions of Jesus.

He was thinking of the church and the perception of the general masses-------the general masses are wrong.

He is looking out for the church and protecting it from stupidity

We don’t know anything about the conversation that was taking place so it’s impossible for us to know what Pope Francis was talking about.

Catholics invented a pope, there isnt one in the Bible, just to exert more control. And then they had to invent ex-cathedra to try and control the popes. (I'm not real clear on it, I'm Protestant.)

I like the architecture. :)

Yeah! I know what you ,mean. It is just so easy to insert words like faggot into a conversation. Could be for any reason.

Frociaggine is an abstract term that doesn’t have an analogue in the English language. Thats why every article you read about this says that it is “roughly translated” as “faggotry.” What the term actually refers to is a particularly hedonistic subculture of gay men. Certainly incompatible with the priesthood. But that doesn’t make for headlines as sexy as mistranslating it to throw the Pope under the bus.

Didnt the pope make that connection himself with his statement?

And apparently according to the pope the vatican has enough of that type of hedonistic culture al;ready.
