The F.B.I. obtained phone records and other documents using national security letters — a secret type of subpoena — officials said. And at least one government informant met several times with Mr. Page and Mr. Papadopoulos, current and former officials said. That has become a politically contentious point, with Mr. Trump’s allies questioning whether the F.B.I. was spying on the Trump campaign or trying to entrap campaign officials.

Mole, spy, government informant.... 3 words that describe the same thing. And there may have been more spying on the Trump campaign than what's currently known.

Wow. Must be a record...you got off topic from the OP...IN the OP, lol. This thread is about an FBI spy planted within Trumps staff, not about Russian collusion. And yet...your last line describes what went into building the "case" for Russian collusion.
 

“Informant” is the term you are looking for.

And what evidence suggests that this person was planted by law enforcement?
 
Real exchange between me and another poster earlier today:

Poster: "There are serious concerns that the Department of Justice influenced the US elections. We know that the Clinton campaign was investigated. Nobody would dispute that. New information is coming to light that not only was the Trump campaign being investigated, a DOJ spy actually infiltrated the Trump campaign. This is very, very concerning that the DOJ would use tools that often require help from other countries to spy on a major Presidential Political Campaign, and it's even more concerning when you realize they were investigating both of the major party's campaigns. This is exactly what people mean when they talk about a corrupt Deep State. This doesn't mean the DOJ tried to pick a winner, but it's easy to see how they were in the situation to pick a winner. I'm very concerned by what the DOJ has gotten away with up to this point, and it has nothing to do with the last election, but everything to do with future elections."

Me: "So the FBI should have stood by and watched as Russians infiltrated a Presidential candidate's campaign?"

And another exchange:

Me: "We're pretty much only a few weeks away from Republicans arguing that Mueller has a conflict of interest in that he couldn't possibly be expected to conduct a fair investigation of somebody he's investigating."

Poster: "He can't really."

The overt belief that trump is above the law is becoming increasingly mainstream among Republicans. At this rate, in a couple months the regular narrative coming out of Fox News will be that it is perfectly legal for the President to commit crimes and that investigating him is unAmerican.
 
Nonsense.

That doesn't imply that they were inside Trump's campaign, nor that they were placed their by the authorities. They way it's describe it looks to be someone who works with law enforcement..not directly for, who meets with suspected criminals to feel them out, and report back to intelligence services. This typically only occurs when someone is engaging in suspicious illegal behavior, of sufficient importance to be monitored by actual informants and agents. We don't know for sure, but it certainly doesn't say a mole or plant, etc.

You do understand that if you go broadcasting that you want to engage in serious illegal activities, that the person who contacts you might be an informant or undercover LEO right? That's how they catch criminals...you get that right? Trump's folks are behaving like two-bit crooks, this doesn't bother you?

Trump's campaign engages clandestine, likely criminal activity with a foreign adversary for political gain, which alerts CIA and FBI and overseas intelligence services to be on watch, ultimately resulting in a full-blown FBI/SC investigation into their connection.

And you're crying foul that two of Trump's campaign team were doing bad-looking stuff?
Or are you mad that Americans are monitoring when people do bad stuff?

Shameful.

We do know that this is a confidential source who has worked with the FBI and CIA in the past.
From what we can gather is that the source came forwards voluntarily.

Looks like the IC doing it's job to investigate Russian meddling and 2 suspected Russian agents working on a political campaign, especially when one's son, son-in-law and campaign manager are in danger of being indicted and/or spending big time in prison. 45's team is just getting ahead of the story to taint the entire Mueller team and investigation by the use of his own presidential powers. Abuse of power.

Ok. What about this... I spent a long time today thinking about what this new excuse means and basically Swampy is admitting to collusion. There was an investigation into the Swampy campaign. They used an informant. The informant (whoever it is) has got the Swampy team very very worried. Especially since they don't know who it was. As Rudy made clear this morning. It MAY have been one of the people who already flipped/Mueller arrested. Swampy being Swampy thinks everyone is out to get him. So he hears the story about the informant and says "They were spying on me!!!!!"

That's the jist of that. However, if there was no collusion. There can be no spy.
 

What 'bad or bad looking stuff' were they doing? And after nearly two years of investigation and surveillance, what 'bad or bad looking stuff' have they found?
 

Sorry, but there can be spies without collusion. Funny how you believe every conspiracy theory out there when it comes to Trump, but the idea that people in positions of government power would do something bad? You dismiss them out of hand.

If I know anything about the FBI. It's they don't put FBI agents or informants into organizations w/o some cause for concern. Not entirely sure it's bad if there was such a cause. Better to investigate all concerns and prove them either wrong or right. That's what the FBI does.

Trump is pulling from a New York Times article but all the article mentions is a government informant no words about embedded spy or anything like that he's leaping to conclusions. Also I find it interesting that when the New York Times publishes information that put's him in a bad light it's fake news but when it publishes something he can extrapolate into some wild Theory it's the Oracle of Truth.
 

To go from government informant to embedded spy is a leap and you know it.
I find it interesting that the right accuses the New York Times of being fake news but are totally willing to use this tidbit of info to extrapolate into some wild Theory when it suits them. The article is about so much more than this but this is the only thing the right focuses on?

I, personally, don't think there was a "spy inside the 2016 campaign". That would necessitate that someone working for the Obama administration was also, under false pretenses, working for the Trump campaign.

The actual information we have..."And at least one government informant met several times with Mr. Page and Mr. Papadopoulos"...is actually a much different thing. One or more people, most likely working for the Obama CIA, meeting with Page and Papa*** doesn't mean those people were spies in the Trump campaign. It just means they were operatives working for the CIA.

Now, the question is...what were they doing? Here is where a certain amount of fact-based speculation comes into play. The most likely is that they were setting Page and Papa*** up to give the FBI a justification to investigate Trump...which they had already been doing for two months and justification for the FISA Title-1 Warrant...which was denied in Jul 2016...application to be approved in Oct 2016.

A more accurate term for those one or more "informants" is "CIA operative". We know who one of them is...and that's exactly what he has done for the CIA and British Intelligence. This setup is well within his skill set.
