The alumni association at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point has canceled an award ceremony for actor and veterans advocate Tom Hanks, citing a desire for the Army service academy to focus on preparing future officers for war after several political controversies involving the Trump administration shook the institution this year.
Retired Army Col. Mark Bieger, president and chief executive officer of the West Point Association of Graduates, disclosed the decision in an email to faculty circulated Friday. A copy of Bieger’s message was reviewed and verified by The Washington Post.
Hanks, 69, was to receive the prestigious Sylvanus Thayer Award, which recognizes an “outstanding citizen” who did not attend West Point and has a distinguished record of service that exemplifies the academy’s ideals: “Duty, Honor, Country.” A ceremony and parade were scheduled for Sept. 25.

He should have the guts to tell TACO to **** off. Apparently, he does not. This is a good indicator that he is not fit to run the alumni association.

Simply declaring that West Point never gave the award to Hanks, and had ALWAYS planned to give it to Taco is something MAGAs will nod silently at and declare its truthiness. Any other narrative is of course TDS.

Funny though, recipients of the Sylvanus Thayer Award normally have a formal award ceremony held at West Point that includes a military parade for the entire Corps of Cadets and an award dinner. This ceremony celebrates the recipient's character and accomplishments, which are seen as aligning with the West Point motto of "Duty, Honor, Country".

What excuse did they use to deny Hanks the ceremony?

I don't really have anything against Hanks, fine actor. However, can you tell me what he's done that touches the U.S. Military Academy at West Point tradition of "Duty, Honor, Country?" He's an actor portraying a character. They give awards for doing that, it's theater not Duty.

Before you answer, keep in mind that even though some recipients have had scheduling issues and not attended their own ceremony, but the ceremonies still took place in their absence.
