We’re gonna need a bigger boat

50 years, huh?

Why...I remember it like it was...50 years ago.

LOL!!

My sons would concur. One became a surfer, and the other really doesn't like the ocean that much.
I read at the time there were those afraid to go into the water after watching Jaws. It didn't have that effect on me, but I can see how it might give some
pause before taking a dip at night.

We saw it on the big screen recently. So much fun.

He chose ground sports like baseball, his real love and football and rugby when he was in college. I can't blame him.
I never had a fear of water, and of course knew it was fake, but it made some kids obviously ocean-shy. What's so funny is he was my oldest. It didn't bother the youngest son at all.

Released 50 years ago today.

I remember being asked by my aunts to take my younger cousins to see "Jaws" and getting strangers yelling at me while in line for taking little kids to such a scary movie. I was like "Lady, my aunts told me to take them." BTW, they loved the movie as did I.

What a career he had. Jaws, the french connection, marathon man, and he was in what I think is the best car chase ever done in the 7 ups. Plus he was in sorcerer, which is one of my favorite movies. Guy had an amazing career.
Unfortunately he was obsessed with getting sun tans.....it came back to kill him.

Anyone else ever read the book? Unlike the movie, Benchley totally ripped off "Moby Dick"....particularly the end.

The line is, "You're going to need a bigger boat." Not, "We're going to need a bigger boat." I remember distinctly.

The book is awesome in its details tho. And he really captured that suspense.

Worst slander of sharks ever.

As if a shark is capable of conceiving of something as nuanced as "revenge."
There have been several documented cases of orcas attacking and sinking boats off the coast of Spain and Portugal, although it is undetermined if revenge was the motive.

Marine mammal vs creatures that pre-date fish. No comparison. Sharks' brains are 1/10 the size of an orca's relative to body size.

Orcas actually collectively teach their young how to hunt. Sharks will immediately try to eat their young as soon as they are born. Only those that can escape their mother survive.

I read it after seeing the movie. It seemed to be more about small town politics than about the shark - after 50 years I might be misremembering it.

But yeah ending as I recall was right out of Moby Dick.

My better half is a Jaws affictionado and has seen every Jaws/shark movie ever filmed.

I didn't think sharks lived for 50 years ;)
