TRUMP’S TOADIES SHOULD TAKE NOTE: WATERGATE SAYS EVERYONE GOES DOWN

...they hope that the volume of their voices might overwhelm the volumes of evidence. These Trump loyalists have now lashed themselves to the presidential mast. And if Watergate is an American parable, most of them will go down too.

Richard Nixon avoided prison time thanks to a pardon, but all the president’s men weren’t so lucky. Four dozen were convicted of criminal charges, and about half did time—including Nixon’s chief of staff, White House counsel, top advisers, and attorney general. Some of Trump’s inner circle, including his lawyer and his campaign manager, are already locked up. Odds are, they won’t be the last.

Nixon’s congressional toadies avoided courts of law, but they couldn’t escape the court of public opinion. Republicans fared so badly in the 1974 elections that prominent conservatives pronounced the GOP DOA.

Note, that wasn't prominent liberals saying that. It was conservatives who declared their party dead. And, in 1974 through about 1980, it was.

Maybe the GOP get lucky and another Reagan can come to save them. But, with Fox News around now, I sort of doubt a Reagan type would even win the GOP primary. Maybe there will come another Pat Buchanan to unite them.

But, getting back to 1974:

Republicans lost 48 seats in the House that fall, with many of the president’s most vocal defenders among them. Take Indiana representative Earl Landgrebe. “Don’t confuse me with the facts: I’ve got a closed mind,” he announced. “I’m going to stick with my President even if he and I have to be taken out of this building and shot.” He wasn’t shot, but voters killed his political career with a humiliating loss that fall.

And Iran-Contra suggests they might not. Pardon the criminals, cover up the crimes, and Bush was elected, followed soon after by Democrats losing the House for the first time in decades. It's just not that simple how politics go relative to corrupt criminal behavior and impeachment.

They deserve to lose badly. But labor deserved to win in the UK. We just need to try to defeat them. We know they deserve defeat, their cult thinks they don't. Hopefully, they get the backlash they deserve; we need Bernie and a Democratic Congress. But no guarantee what voters will do. It's looking pretty good, though.

But, getting back to 1974:

The notable difference here is now that we're nearing the beginning of the Senate trial, it doesn't look like there will be the change of heart from anyone on the GOP. Public opinion isn't split along the same lines as it was with Nixon so that pressure doesn't exist either. We'll see how the Senate trial goes, but I expect this to go on party lines and Trump walks out of this relatively unscathed. A censure perhaps was something that would have been a more realistic result.

People who keep trying to draw a parallel between Watergate and StupidSchiffgate is that there were actual crimes during Watergate. And those others that went down committed them.
