The Republicans in Washington state have two leading candidates for governor this upcoming election. One, a former Representative to Congress and former Sheriff who is, for most purposes, a rational Republican with conservative views and the other? A school board member in a small city. OK. But, he's also a convicted thief, a self-admitted liar to the US Army and self-promoter who has claimed to have been trained and served in various capacities in Iraq, who has claimed to have committed several acts of bravery and been found out by the Army. Who two former Green Berets have openly stated that he didn't do what he claims to have done and has accepted commendations for things he didn't do. But, for some unfathomable reason, the Republican hierarchy has decided to back him against the other candidate. This just points out that the Republican party of old no longer exists now that they openly support liars, thieves and grifters over rational, admirable candidates. Why? Obviously, it's become a cult. Even in Washington state.

The Republican Party is dead. They're just using the name.

Unfortunately, if Reichert runs, he wins. Over the Dem candidate, whoever it is, as well.

Things arent looking good. We havent had a Republican gov for decades.

Very tough for WA state republicans to win. Smart politicians who care about their future would rather not run than run and lost. That's why you see crackpot candidates.

Reichert is no crackpot. Again, unfortunately if he runs, he will win. OTOH, he's not as bad as some crackpot but he can be even more effectively damaging.

I'm not a big fan of Reichert but if he wins that won't be the end of the world. The Bird guy... well I don't think so.

I am no fan of Bob Ferguson but I will vote for him as, in 2016, I vowed that I would never vote for any Republican as there is no way that it is guaranteed that Republican isn't a secret MAGAt or won't become one.

Reichert already said he would leave abortion up to the voters, so right there he's putting abortion at risk. Not only that, he'll have the power to overturn the current laws protecting our medical providers and professionals that do abortions on out of state women.

It sucks because he is seen as a moderate. If he runs, he wins :( Including against Ferguson.

A lot has changed since 2016. You got you blind not to see what the Democrats have done to the state.

want to know what washington state with NOT have on its ballot in the next election?

donald tRump's name

... It turns out Washington has a law on the books against convicted felons running for office.

It was first established back when Washington was a territory, in 1865, that anyone convicted of “infamous crimes” could be blocked from holding elected office. That was modified in 1959, and then again more recently, to the scheme we have today.

Any registered voter can “challenge the right of a candidate to appear on the general election ballot” for any of five causes, state law says. One of those causes is flashing in bold neon lights today: “Because the person whose right is being contested was, previous to the election, convicted of a felony by a court of competent jurisdiction, the conviction not having been reversed nor the person’s civil rights restored after the conviction.” ...

Paywall. Does this apply to federal office or just state? And I cant find this reported anywhere else yet.

Edit: Found another way in, here:

"I asked the Secretary of State’s Office if there was some reason this provision allowing ballot challenges against convicted felons might not apply in this case. For example, is it only for state and local candidates, not federal?
They answered: “Whether that provision applies would be a question for courts to decide.”" link

Figures.
