Contrary to polls showing that relatively few Native Americans take offense at the Washington Redskins’ name, a new UC Berkeley study has found that at least half of more than 1,000 Native Americans surveyed are offended by the football team’s 87-year-old moniker and Native mascots in general.
The results are particularly timely in the face of Native American protests against caricatures of their culture, including the tomahawk chop — performed by fans of the Kansas City Chiefs, who won Sunday’s Super Bowl — and other sports teams with Native American monikers.
The study’s findings, to be published this month in the journal of Social Psychological and Personality Science, show that the degree to which those surveyed identified as Native American influenced how offensive they found Native mascots.
Of those polled for the study, 57% who strongly identify with being Native American and 67% of those who frequently engage in tribal cultural practices were found to be deeply insulted by caricatures of Native American culture.
Overall, the results suggest the controversy over the use of Native representations, such as chief headdresses, war cries and the tomahawk chop, is far from over.

For goodness sake, just change the name. Daniel Snyder should be forced to sell the team.

"Studies bad! School bad!"Hmmm...
People should know by now how I feel about studies. This one is no exception.
Elizabeth Warren.
I guess it could be possible... I suppose some do exist.
Still, unless they are really big on buying tickets to games, and it would hit the Owner's pocket books, I say let the Owner's decide if they need take action.

Yawn. First, you'll have to explain all those high schools on the Indian reservations who have "Redskins" or other Native American names for their athletic teams.
Redskins is a racial slur presented as a stereotype. FSU has the blessing of the tribe. Yours is a bs defense.
As of July 2019 there were 48 high schools using the name "Redskins." Many of those are on or near Indian reservations.

Why do they need to be "dealt with first"? There are still plenty of schools named after Confederates. There's a ton of racism in society. It needn't all be "dealt with" before any other.
Your defense is bs.
"There's other racist stuff so we can't deal with this racism."
It's not racist.
Your defense is still bs. There's no obligation to deal with other names. One could just as well name anything that should be dealt with and claim that must be accomplished first.
"Dealt with first" does not come from any post of mine.

Yes, if you want to attack the name "Redskins" as a slur then you'll need to explain why so many of the alleged victims proudly use it.
That's stupid bs. There are many inappropriate and unacceptable names. That does not excuse the NFL team.
The name is neither inappropriate nor unacceptable. That's the point.
Are you finished whatabouting?
The name is racist and should be changed.
The name is not racist and no change is called for.
See the OP.
Dear white people, stop telling Native Americans like me whether we're offended by the Washington Redskins
My tribe doesn’t identify as 'redskins' – this is a derogatory term coined by colonialists often historically used interchangeably with 'savages'. We don’t need polls by newspapers to understand that racial slurs are offensive

I know quite a few folks who "self-identify" as Native Americans. All Americans know of the most famous one of recent years...Elizabeth Warren.
So a bunch of "anonymous" participants who "self-identify" for an online survey are the basis for this study? :unsure13:
I guess it could be possible. Of course, "anecdotally" I've encountered some few "actual" Native American's in my life. Never found a one who cared one whit about most names used by sports teams. I suppose some do exist.
Still, unless they are really big on buying tickets to games, and it would hit the Owner's pocket books, I say let the Owner's decide if they need take action.
