It makes me wonder if Josh wasn't abused also.
I have no doubt that strict Christian upbringings create sexual deviants.Josh's upbringing was abuse even if he was never inappropriately touched.
He did not have a healthy environment in which to deal with puberty.
He may not have become a pedophile if he hadn't been trapped in that pressure cooker during his sexually formative years.
You know, I had a nasty thought this morning.
The story goes, back when Josh was a teenager and this was only known to the family, Jim Bob sent Josh to a state police officer for a "talking to." The reports of bad behavior stopped.
The cop was arrested two years later for child pornography and is serving 56 years after violating a parole attempt.
So what was the real conversation between those two? Did Hutchens teach Josh how to not get caught? Because why would anyone think the behavior stopped just like that? Did Hutchens introduce Josh to another outlet for his sexual urges? I suppose I'm being too fanciful here, but it makes me wonder.
Studies have shown that child sex offenders aren't actually abused themselves anymore than other juvenile offenders. If it is a very young child perping on other young children, it can be a flag (how do they know to do THAT?), but I'm not sure we could assume that with a 14 year old. It's a possibility, of course. It makes me wonder if Josh wasn't abused also.
Being socially awkward and isolated from their peer group is noticeably higher among child sex offenders, yes. And I'm guessing there wasn't a lot of open, frank discussion about sex in that family. Not hugging or holding hands or kissing until marriage? That's just plain out there. Where would a growing boy's normal urges go in such a case? Dad punished him for masturbation, even.Josh's upbringing was abuse even if he was never inappropriately touched.
He did not have a healthy environment in which to deal with puberty.

Maybe the cop offered. I doubt if Jim Bob wanted Josh to be a pedophile.Something I wondered myself, and I also wondered if taking him to that particular officer wasn't deliberate on Jim Bob's part.
And if he'd gotten appropriate counseling at 14, when this began. It's no guarantee, but it can work.Josh's upbringing was abuse even if he was never inappropriately touched.
He did not have a healthy environment in which to deal with puberty.

Personally I think that many children is not really healthy.Josh's upbringing was abuse even if he was never inappropriately touched.

Sure I have seen families who adopted/took in massive numbers of children, but they were indeed not doing it out of religious extremism but out of love. If you teach your children that this kind of dealing with children is normal, you will never break the vicious circle generation upon generation. It can be done in a healthy manner. I've seen it.
But the Duggar version was unhealthy in many ways, including but not limited to the twisted religious aspect.
The Duggars were cranking out kids for ratings while neglecting the needs of their glaringly troubled son, and allegedly actively exacerbating his sexual trauma with such things as the day-long, in-front-of-filming-crew punishment for masturbation.

There was always something weird there. Iirc Jim Bob only knew Hutchins because he came and inspected their car lot. So it's not like the guy was somebody who gave a rats behind what Josh had done. By law he was required to report it but didn't.
It comes down to Jim Bob was freaking out that his TLC golden goose would stop laying eggs if the story got out. It was also mentioned that when sending Josh to a certified rehab, they balked because they didn't want him being mixed in with sexual deviants.
They failed Josh, they failed their daughters because that cash cow was the only way they could afford all those kids. So much stuff donated to them constantly. Have you ever seen that compound? It's like a hotel.
I'm not trying to discount what you've seen. But when kids are raising kids, which has to be done when you have that many, I don't see it as a good thing. The kids really don't get
their childhood.
The Duggars called them "jurisdictions". They had their 10 year olds doing laundry for 19 people and cooking tater tots for dinner, and watching the kids and changing their diapers. Jim Bob and Michelle probably spent all day in bed making another baby.
multiple characteristics of individual youths and their social systems (family, peers, school) are linked with juvenile sexual offending...I always thought it was just the opposite, which is what makes me wonder. And of course Josh was not a very young child at 13-15. Not that it couldn't have been curiosity, but these kinds of things always make me wonder. And if he was abused, it may not have been Jim Bob, of course.
The Effective Treatment of Juveniles Who Sexually Offend: An Ethical Imperative
This article raises serious concerns regarding the widespread use of unproven interventions with juveniles who sexually offend and suggests innovative methods for addressing these concerns. Dominant interventions (i.e., cognitive-behavioral group treatments ...www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov
Reading that article, Josh ticks off quite a few boxes, unfortunately.Thanks.
20-50% certainly isn't the majority, but still fairly high, to me.
I found this interesting and maybe more of a cause in Josh's case: "Research has indicated that, similar to families of violent or nonviolent nonsexual offenders, families of juvenile sexual offenders evidence lower levels of positive communication and warmth than do families of nondelinquent youths. In addition, consistent with findings for families of juvenile nonsexual offenders, families of juvenile sexual offenders show relatively low rates of parental monitoring and high rates of parent-child and interparental conflict and violence "
None of us can diagnose the cause of Josh's behavior, of course, but it does make me more hopeful that he wasn't abused himself.
Ugh. That is just so wrong to me.
It's wrong to anyone with a working brain.
Some people have kids for the purpose of slaves, I guess. The Duggars called them "jurisdictions". None of those Quiver-fulls are normal. We had one at my last company with 14 kids. They needed two vans to transport them all. I'll say this though; the dude worked every available hour of overtime possible...lolPersonally I think that many children is not really healthy.
