Getting a Government Job?
You have to show your papers there too ?
Why is it only bad when we want to make sure only legal US citizens are voting for US Elected officials ???.....
It's almost as if the Left want's to be able to Cheat on Elections......

You must be young. A substantial portion of the right used to be adamantly opposed to national ID.
I just had to spend a morning at the DMV to get another id card. The state of California knows exactly who I am. They’ve had my fingerprint for decades. Had to see my birth certificate to get my license here 40 some years ago. Done some federal time.
My tax dollars were spent to get all that from me. Sits on systems they pay for too.
But somehow I have to get some papers together to prove who I am. When they could verify it in seconds with those systems.
