Have you heard about this case in Leipzig?

In security footage, Star of David necklace does not appear to be visible around Gil Ofarim’s neck, despite his claims that he was told to remove it if he wanted to check in

The Central Council of Jews in Germany said in a statement it was “shocked” by what it called antisemitic behavior at the hotel. Leipzig is the largest city in Saxony, a region of Germany that is a stronghold for the country’s far-right political party, Alternative for Democracy or AfD.

The American Jewish Committee, which tweeted Ofarim’s video with English subtitles, described the incident as “heartbreaking.”

According to the AJC, one employee had been suspended, but, the committee said, “more must be done.”

It launched an online petition, “calling on Marriott to not only apologize, but to commit to training its employees about antisemitism.”

The hotel employee who was accused of antisemitism is now reportedly filing a counter-complaint against Ofarim for defamation.

There should be more news about this case today.

The court of social media:

A number of investigations are now underway, according to Leipzig police. Ofarim has not pressed charges, though a third party did file an online complaint for incitement.

"Now it's about waiting to see what the investigations lead to and what actually happened on that day," Leipzig police spokesperson Olaf Hoppe said.

Patience may be hard to come by. As is often the case when allegations of racism, xenophobia, and other forms of hate and discrimination make headlines, social media outrage has been piling up to decry what Ofarim said he experienced in the Westin lobby.

Leipzig nimmt Platz, an anti-fascist group that organized the protest, made its message on Instagram clear: "Don't give fascism one inch! Don't give antisemitism one inch!"

In a tweet from the protest, the head of Leipzig's Social Democrats, Irena Rudolph-Kokot, wrote: "We aren't here as parties or coalitions, but as citizens of this city who are truly shocked."

Today now it seems this case was quite different.

These 2 video's, both taken that night show (according to German news media) that the accuser does not seem to be wearing a visible star of David. Well the employee is innocent until proven guilty, and the man he accuses has also visited the police to lodge a complaint against the singer for making false accusations. And of that the singer of course is innocent until proven otherwise.

This is quite a controversial case.

This is quite a controversial case.
From what I am reading the controversy is especially the fact that it seems that he had no neck chain on at all, and especially not with a star of David.

I immediately regarded the whole story with skepticism. German hotels, be they of the Westin group (Marriott) or other, are not known for hiring managers of anti-semitic sentiment or, worse still, those prone to express any such thing.

And while that is not conclusive, this wouldn't be the first time that Gil Ofarim has publicly gone attention-whoring in pursuit of gaining a greater prominence that he seems to feel is due to him.

There is also the controversy about what the hotel receptionist had said or not had said.

Looking back:

Several weeks ago German Jewish singer Gil Ofarim's claimed that he was refused service by a hotel in Leipzig, Germany because he wore a Star of David pendant, sparking outrage across Germany and even criminal proceedings.

However, on Sunday, German news outlet Bild published security footage from the hotel that showed Ofarim was not wearing any pendants when he approached the hotel receptionist. The paper also said that the police investigated the matter and found no conclusive evidence that the singer's allegations were true.

There is also the controversy about what the hotel receptionist had said or not had said.
Except there was no star of David around his neck according to the video. So how can someone say "put that star of David away"? In the last day the controversy has moved on mostly towards the singer and his accusations that now sound a bit "iffy"

The Westin Leipzig Hotel mouthpiece stated today that they lifted the suspension on the employee in question, after having reconstructed the incident in the hotel lobby with the help of specialized lawyers (what ever that is).

The employee is exonerated.

Whether Gil Ofarim made his accusation to serve own publicity or was being overly sensitive to previous anti-semitic attacks on him (as he now claims in social media) and, intentionally or not, conflated those with his perception, this whole thing has done all efforts to counter anti-semitism in general precious little good.

The lawyers you refer too did a 118 page report about the incident, they interviewed all the witnesses and reviewed footage etc.

Thanks for the info.

I never believed the whole story, anyway (Ofarim has a track record of going attention-whoring, even where IIRC not on this kind of thing).

Do you remember?
Now the case goes on ....

Gil Ofarim posted a video online last October alleging he received antisemitic abuse from a hotel employee. Now prosecutors have accused him of making false claims about the incident.

It gets clearer and clearer that Ofarim invented that case ....

I kind of suspected as much at the time.

Gil Ofarim always comes across as something of an attention whore.

Does nobody remember that case any more?
It is a cold case that is no getting hot again.
