LAS VEGAS (AP) — Terrified students and professors cowered in classrooms and dorms as a gunman roamed the floors of a University of Nevada, Las Vegas building, killing three people and critically wounding a fourth before dying in a shootout with police.

The gunman in Wednesday’s shooting was a professor who had unsuccessfully sought a job at the school, a law enforcement official with direct knowledge of the investigation told The Associated Press. He previously worked at East Carolina University in North Carolina, said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to release the information publicly.

Another law enforcement official identified the suspect as Anthony Polito, 67. Investigators searched an apartment in Henderson, Nevada, late Wednesday as part of the investigation and retrieved several electronic devices, including Polito’s cellphone, the official said. The official was not authorized to discuss details of the investigation and spoke to AP on condition of anonymity.

Maybe he was upset that they wouldn't give him tenure.

UNLV has been known as the Harvard of the West. Big B-ball school.

I read somewhere he was a fan of Alex Jones and George Soros, so there is something for everyone here.

UNLV gunman, Anthony Polito, was professor at ECU, student at Duke

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (WTVD) -- The gunman suspected of killing three people and injuring a fourth at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas was once a professor at East Carolina University and before that a student at Duke University.

Anthony Polito, 67, was shot and killed by campus police within minutes of shots being fired on campus.

Authorities have determined that the victims who were killed in the shooting were faculty or staff, not students. That suggests the attack was not entirely random, but it's not clear yet if he knew the particular individuals.

Polito began work as an assistant professor at East Carolina University on Aug. 13, 2001. He worked in the Department of Marketing and Supply Chain Management in the College of Business. He resigned on Jan. 17, 2017 as a tenured associate professor.

ABC11 confirmed he received a Master of Business Administration from The Fuqua School of Business at Duke University in 1991. He also earned a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Georgia.

Almost a senior citizen. Maybe he got weighed down by all his credentials. Dead now.

I read somewhere he was a fan of Alex Jones and George Soros, so there is something for everyone here.

A fan of both Alex Jones AND George Soros? That seems like a rather self-contradictory worldview, quite frankly.

Maybe he was schizophrenic.

Aren't they completely opposite each other?
It would be like being a fan of gangster rap and Morris dancing.

I suspect the guy had a few screws loose.

Yeah it looks like he resigned a good job in 2017. You think these intelligent people have their act together then remember that the Unibomber graduated Harvard and had a PhD.

The older i get the more i realize that no one completely has their act together, no matter what it looks like on the outside.

I was reading an article this week that pointed out that 18% of Americans have clinical depression. More are borderline.

Canada has likely got similar numbers.

These types of problems could be proactively prevented in grade school imo.

I think much of it is just people trying to adapt to a world that is changing faster than humans were meant to experience.

Many people think if you have contradictory concepts you have a split personality. There is no such thing. You can be diagnosed with a schizoid personality disorder or schizophrenia but they are not the same and no in either case you don't have a split personality. In fact someone with a schizoid personality disorder is often mixed up with someone with autism. It causes the person to be unable to be intimate and show emotions or form relationships and so it can be confused with people with autism or anti social personality disorders or even sociopaths or psychopaths. This is different than schizophrenia where the neurotransmission link garbles and triggers one of the 5 senses to go off at the wrong time causing people to hear, see, taste, feel, smell things that d o not necessarily exist.

When someone goes off on a shooting they usually have had some kind of undiagnosed issue or maybe one that was diagnosed and went untreated. The real issue is that anyone can get access to a gun in the US and there is no proper screening process for assuring such individuals with guns are stable and sane.

So this happens over and over and most times no formal psychiatric diagnosis was ever obtained.

I was not disagreeing with Allan by the way. I know what he meant. I actually think most mass shooters are undiagnosed but have schizoid personality disorder, schizophrenia, anti-social personality disorder-one of those three with paranoid delusions as one of the attributes. I think it is scary to think just how many unstable and undiagnosed mentally ill people there are. I am not saying they are all violent. In fact stats show most are not or if they are they are more likely to hurt themselves first. What I am saying is you in the US just won't acknowledge that if you don't find a better way to screen people who buy guns your continuous slaughter of each other will continue.

I appreciate in a democracy we have to balance individual basic rights of freedom but screening people before they buy guns should be no different than how we screen people before they get driver's licenses, use explosives in construction jobs or engage in high risk and danger positions. Risk prevention is something the US has no shortage of experts on but when it comes to handling weapons such experts are ignored.

They all agree on proper training and screening of people who own guns and its not being done. We ignore the repeat warnings of police, ATF, occupational health and safety experts, professional gun clubs where the owners of these clubs instill proper training and education as well as safe handling and storage of weapons.

I myself do not hunt and am against it as a sport but I support professional hunting associations for the same reasons I mentioned above. Most insist on proper gun handling, storage and training.

The subsistence hunters I know respect their rifles as vital tools to eat not compensate for unresolved issues as to the size of their penis or other underlying psychiatric or behavioural issues.

I do not understand the cultural dependence Americans have on guns to define their collective and individual identities. In an ideal world if we could teach every child proper martial arts training there would be none of these arrested emotional development with guns. It is not going to happen in the US and each week on this thread we will see mass shooting after mass shooting. Its insane. You Americans deserve a better life than living under the oppression of y our fear of fellow Americans and therefore your chronic dependence on weapons.
