Haley announces $285M cut in 2018-19 UN operating budget

Calling it “a big step in the right direction,” U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley on Sunday night announced a historic reduction in the U.N. biennial operating budget.

Haley said the plan calls for a $285 million cut for the 2018-19 fiscal year.

I agree that the US should cut back its contribution. From the OP article:
"The U.S. pays about 22 percent of the U.N.’s budget, or roughly $3.3 billion, and fully 28 percent of its peacekeeping effort." Far greater than any other country.

You may well have a valid point, but Trumps tactic of "vote against me and I will take my ball (UN money) and go home", simply makes the USA look childish. Then again, with Trump in charge there can be no other logical perception.

When making my comment I didn't even think of Trump's latest quip regarding the UN. I have had the opinion the USA pays way to much of the UN budget long before Trump ever came on scene. While the concept of the UN is ok, it is very dysfunctional. Has been for years.

Why should the US taxpayer pay almost a quarter of the UN budget. Especially when we are borrowing about .40 of every dollar spent.
 

This isn't the first time Trump and Haley have trimmed the UN.

When the American taxpayer foots the majority of the bill, it is not unreasonable to expect some return on our investment. In other words, would you continue to patronize a restaurant that serves crappy food and has lousy service? Of course not. Then you take your business elsewhere.
 

And what has he achieved?
 

As Haley says, $285 is a start.

The UN consistently acts against our interest, then cuts the meeting short in order to meet the bank deposit time.

Unless something changes quickly, the Democrat mantra will be Bbbut Trump. That's all they got.
 

It's dysfuntional because it long ago abandoned it's own charter goals and sought to become the framework for "one world government". It does far more damage then good. For example in regards to the Israel/Palestinean issue, the UN is the biggest single reason the Palestineans are not seeking peaceful co-existence with Israel.

That's my point. If the UN would treat the issue as they should and let the Palestinians know that the gravy train completely stops until they accept Israel's right to exist and seriously work at peaceful co-existence with them, the conflict would be resolved in a matter of months. Instead the UN has been enabling bad behavior for decades.
 
More stupidity being celebrated as winning. Another cheer goes up from Putin as America relinquishes its position as leader of the free world
