Yesterday, as a task force of 125 officers, some riding Snowcats in the rugged terrain, continued their search, it was revealed that Dorner has become the first human target for remotely-controlled airborne drones on US soil.
A senior police source said: “The thermal imaging cameras the drones use may be our only hope of finding him. On the ground, it’s like looking for a needle in a haystack.”
Asked directly if drones have already been deployed, Riverside Police Chief Sergio Diaz, who is jointly leading the task force, said: “We are using all the tools at our disposal.”
The use of drones was later confirmed by Customs and Border Patrol spokesman Ralph DeSio, who revealed agents have been prepared for Dorner to make a dash for the Mexican border since his rampage began.

Paying for helicopters is better? I presume you believe aerial search and engagement surveillance is warranted.
If you are alright with police using helicopters you cannot oppose using drones for the same function.
Can I use a drone or a helicopter to follow someone in the middle of a city?
I love when the cops say this. It's a great way to gloss over all the tools the government is using that they don't really want to talk about.
Why not? PIs use cars all the time.
I'll accept it until they arm the drone and start trying to gun him down.
I'll accept it until they arm the drone and start trying to gun him down.
What do you suppose the reaction will be the first time a citizen takes down a drone?
Well you go ahead and use a helicopter in the way they use them. See what happens.
Anyway, a helicopter and a drone are not even comparable. One is loud, huge, and not designed for surveillance and the other is small, almost undetectable by sound and designed for surveillance. The fact is you don't want the government being able to watch people without them knowing. It is just a horrible idea.
I'm thinking the only thing a drone and a helicopter have in common other than both probably using common materials, is that they both fly. Beyond that, the technology is entirely different and the goal of the technology is entire different along with it's potential uses.
What do you suppose the reaction will be the first time a drone takes down your neighbor while they are in the middle of having a family BBQ?
Drones are often incredibly loud what are you talking about? They are giant freaking aircraft with turbines in them. Early Predator variants were described as sounding like "Lawnmowers in the sky".
The government can already watch you without you knowing if they really wanted to. It's called a plane, a satellite, a camera, or any number of things.
I can, and I will!
Just curious, why do you think it is ok for police to use helicopters for survellience, but it's not ok to use drones for the same thing?
With a helicopter, you presume to know that your privacy is being invaded. But with drones, privacy is invaded unknowingly in probably 99.99% of the time, and as technology progresses, the likelihood of home/car invasion with drones is probable. Besides, the issue of armed drones comes into play. Then, the downward slope of assassinations on American soil by the police with drones. Don't be surprised to read about that kind of stuff within the next couple of years. That's why I'm against it, it's a completely dangerous doorway that's been opened as compared to helicopters. It really is going to be apples to oranges once the first precedent occurs.
Well you go ahead and use a helicopter in the way they use them. See what happens.
