An unspecified number of US embassies and consulates around the world will be closed due to security fears, the State Department says.
"The Department of State has instructed certain US embassies and consulates to remain closed or to suspend operations on Sunday, August 4," State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said on Thursday.
The decision was taken "out of an abundance of caution and care for our employees and others who may be visiting our installations," she said.
A senior official told ABC News that the embassies will close in response to "a specific threat against a U.S. embassy or consulate."

Hmmm interesting. Seems kind of random to all the sudden close some of our embasies for sometime.
So what do you suspect the reason might be? Some darker, deeper motive?
I would suspect so, or certainly hope so. I hope its not ehh everyone needs a vacation right now. I wish they would verify the reason however.
Well ate last your embassy workers aren't striking.

(grin!)
Kind of poetic, ain't it?
Ours are more boring, no one ever attacks our embassies.

was surprised to learn a while back that tijuana is a high risk state department assignment
staffers must learn to fire an array of weapons and pass an evasive driving test
so, if south san diego is considered high risk, it appears many other locales are, too
possibly too many to staff securely

would this not be something they should specify?
why should American citizens not be allowed to know where there is or is not a US embassy or consulate presence?Could be a lot of things. Could be nothing.
Nope.
We're probably going all "war of the gargantuas" and building an army of giant, furry Frankenstein clones
Could be a lot of things. Could be nothing.

It's just one day. If it's to prevent another Benghazi, they have pretty good reason not to reveal any details.why should American citizens not be allowed to know where there is or is not a US embassy or consulate presence?
the other option is to have to guess whether there is one, with the possibility of guessing wrong while needing the state department's assistance
Meh, good enough for government work.Just as I suspected. Send in the clones.
That really narrows down the options.

yes, a crisis such that it causes the embassies/consulates to be closed
no need to let American citizens in those locales know that they are on their own when/if the shiia hits the fan
[/sarcasm]
The locations have been released:
US to temporarily shut down embassies around the world Sunday amid security concerns | Fox News
If anyone is dumb enough to go to those places at a time like this, they're idiots who are just begging for trouble.
And I don't think they should. I don't believe this information should have released at all.ok. when i expressed the opinion that the locations of these closed facilities should be made known you insisted that they should not
many of the affected American citizens could have already made unmodifiable travel plans or they may already be in country without a means to leave. don't see that as begging for trouble. do see that as your posts being critical of that which you do not understand
they want to thwart any phoney distractions that may occur
