Ah so because governments have lied, you could say they are lying whenever you feel like it. Why do you think that this is insightful or clever? Again, this stupid con has been around since before you were born. It's the same b******* people use to say scientists are lying about evolution, or climate change. It's laughable.

There's a difference between blatant government lies and reality. See if you can figure out what that is.
 
Pick and choose whatever; I choose to be sceptical of any 'official' government statement. History and precedent taught me caution.

It's more that I'm trying to tease an answer out of people that can't seem to explain their reasoning. I think I was pretty clear that this could have been handled at a lower level that the president.

NORAD is a bi-national command of the United States and Canada which makes it unique in the world.

The NORAD 4-star commanding general is always from the USA and also commands US Northern Command. The two unified commands are responsible for the defense of North America. The Army Infantry regiment I was in, in the Military District of Washington DC is in the Northern Command as a part of the US 5th Army. Elements of the 5th Army I was in have been at the southern border since the then Potus Trump ordered 'em there in August 2018 (with National Guard units).

NORCOM also has the US 1st Air Force that did all the shooting. F-22s from NORCOM West at Elmendorf AFB in Alaska shot down the objects over Alaska and the Yukon. NORCOM East splashed the balloon off SC. F-18s from the Canada 1st Air Division flew on the NORCOM West missions. F-35 fighters tracked the objects and did intelligence gathering in flight. The F-22 planes were sent up to do the shoot.

The CG of NORAD-NORCOM acts on order only of the Potus.CinC and the Prime Minister of Canada. The CG never acts on his own or independently.

NORAD provides warnings and warning information to the Potus/CinC and to the Prime Minister of Canada. The NORAD CG doesn't do anything without a direct order from the Potus/CinC. The same CG who has NORCOM does not have delegated authority from the Potus/CinC or the Prime Minister of Canada to use military force in the United States or in Canada. The NORAD-NORCOM CG acts on order only. The CG acts only on the direct order of the Potus/CinC who confers beforehand with the Prime Minister of Canada.


The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) is a United States and Canada bi-national organization charged with the missions of aerospace warning, aerospace control and maritime warning for North America. The commander is responsible to both the U.S. president and the Canadian prime minister. For the aerospace warning mission, the commander of NORAD provides an integrated tactical warning and attack assessment to the governments of Canada and the United States. NORAD provides civil authorities with a potent military response capability to counter domestic airspace threats should all other methods fail.



PM Trudeau endorsed Potus Biden shooting down the balloon in US airspace and over US territorial waters. This of course was the balloon that was allowed to pass over Canada and into USA sovereign airspace. US intelligence milked the balloon dry of information before it was shot down. In the instance of the object shot down over Canada, Potus Biden authorized the use of US military force and Trudeau issued the order to the US F-22s to down the object over the Canada Yukon Territory adjacent to Alaska.

No active duty military commander in the continental United States is authorized to use force except, in the military terminology, ON ORDER, meaning by the direct order of the Potus/CinC. The SecDef will confirm the order, given the only two members of the US Government who can issue an order to the armed forces are the Potus/CinC and the SecDef. No one else.

Military commanders may not initiate an order to another military commander. Military commanders act only ON ORDER whatever it is, to include delegated authority abroad. The CENTCOM CG for instance can order an action because he has the authority delegated to him ON ORDER by the national command authority, ie, Potus/CinC and/or SecDef, in accordance with the law.

Reminds me a bit of the 1968 movie Ice Station Zebra, about a chase to the Arctic to recover a satellite capsule that photographed both American and Soviet missile sites.
