This is the testimony of Emily Kelly Callahan who was a nurse working for Doctors Without Borders inside Gaza for 3 weeks before being evacuated via the Rafah crossing.
She describes the dreadful conditions in Gaza and how the lack of safety, water, medical supplies and food are taking lives in droves.
She speaks of the tensions of being a westerner in a Gazan hospital in which many of the people coming in are angry at the international staff for their govts complicity in the crimes being perpetrated by the Israeli state and how the Palestinian health workers eased those tensions " with kindness and love".
They made sure she got through the crossing even though they were losing people " left and right" and knew their return could likely be to face imminent death.
She refers to them as " heroes" and the " most amazing people she has ever met".
They are choosing to stay and treat people even though they know the risks of becoming a fatality are high, they are driven by their sense of community she says.
The interview is with CNN
