The rule actually states that although it has huge costs, there will be no benefits to human health or the environment.

An editorial, "Label without a cause," on these pages almost five years ago was prescient. Its subtitle read, "Mandatory labeling of GM [genetically modified] food in the United States will not only make all food more costly but also bamboozle consumers." Well, Congress did mandate labeling, and USDA created a mind-boggling labeling regulation that contends for the most bewildering, least cost-effective regulation ever. To say nothing of its probable unconstitutionality.

What elevates the rule from an irritant to an outrage are USDA's own admissions about its costs, which will "range from $569 million to $3.9 billion for the first year." But thereafter, there will be additional costs annually – "in perpetuity." as the rule says – of "$68 million to $234 million at a three percent discount rate and $91 million to $391 million at a seven percent discount rate."

This is a long winded tome saying basically, both sides agree the law will do nothing more than clutter up the label and do nothing for the consumer.

And as the great philosopher, Forrest Gump said, “Stupid is as stupid does”. So I expect the bill to pass because some congress critters son-in-law runs a label compliance company, and everyone has to pay the vig to someone!

If I take super silver haze and cross it with durban poison, will the offspring be genetically modified?

the whole GMO hysteria is super stupid. that said, this is from like 3 years ago.

Actually, the label will inform the consumer. Which is what labeling is intended to do. So while this law may not clean up the environment or cure cancer, it does have some value to the consumer. The hyperbole of Dr. Miller is clearly over the top just because he strongly supports genetically modified food. Considering that the obviously biased rant of Dr. Miller was something you specifically chose, I think we can safely surmise your position on the issue.
