Cities across the US have agreed to pay out a total of more than $80m in settlements to protesters injured by police during 2020 racial justice protests – a figure experts believe is unprecedented and will rise further as many lawsuits are still playing out. The brutal murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers on 25 May 2020 sparked the largest nationwide demonstrations since the civil rights era, as upwards of 26 million people gathered to protest racism and police brutality.

But, three years later, at least 19 US cities will pay more than $80m total to protesters who sustained various injuries as a result of law enforcement action, ranging from being teargassed to being shot with projectiles, and have filed dozens of civil lawsuits. Thousands were traumatized, some were permanently injured and have sued successfully.

“You don’t recover from something like this. That’s not a thing you do,” said Linda Tirado, who was partially blinded after being fired on by the police while covering the protests that engulfed Minneapolis as a journalist. Anthony Evans was shot in the jaw in Austin by police using so-called less-than-lethal ammunition during a Black Lives Matter protest in the Texas capital in 2020. “We were never, like, cussing or yelling in their face or anything. It was all just peaceful,” Evans said.

The militarization of the police is costly and counter-productive.

Yeah now police can’t beat the shit out of black people and get away with it. Such a shame

I wish that were true. But sadly, since we are scared to death to reform the police, they will continue to do it and the taxpayer will continue to subsidize it.

Sounds like a lot, right? Spread out over months and multiple cities with multiple cases? It ain't.

The 1992 LA riots cost more than 10 times as much.

this is ridiculous. Violent protestors should not be profiting off of their rioting, and property destruction. The 80M at BEST, should be deducted from the billions in property damage these sub human pieces of trash caused all across US cities.

Rioting pays. Why work?

The riots cost more.

While many of the rioters, it has been shown, were not part of the protests, it seems quite possible that the police response to the protests contributed to the rioting.

"Researchers have spent 50 years studying the way crowds of protesters and crowds of police behave—and what happens when the two interact. One thing they will tell you is that when the police respond by escalating force—wearing riot gear from the start, or using tear gas on protesters—it doesn’t work. In fact, disproportionate police force is one of the things that can make a peaceful protest not so peaceful. But if we know that (and have known that for decades), why are police still doing it?"

LEO, who are there to enforce the law, such as trespassing, larceny, grand theft, vandalism etc, are in no way responsible for or the cause of people CHOOSING to trespass, destroy property, steal etc.

What is your source for this in-depth analysis?

The on-topic reply would be:

LEOs, who are there to enforce the law, are utterly and completely responsible for CHOOSING to brutalize peaceful protestors and should pay the medical bills and damages to those they harmed.

Jump to conclusions much? Obviously the people who filed suit against police and won were not violent nor riotous. But you go right on being wrongly outraged if it makes you feel good.

Specifically, how did you determine that the people who were awarded money were individually responsible for property damage and by how much?
I didn't. I pointed out the riots resulted in hundreds of millions in damages. Can you show how any of the people receiving this "reward" actually deserve it? What police misconduct are you alleging resulted in this?

but that didn't happen. When you play stupid games, you win stupid prizes. Why do you think an LEO should stand there and be assaulted by sub human filth? Why do you think a LEO should stand there and not try and prevent these sub human pieces of shit from destroying property and/or assaulting people?

It helps if you read the OP.

Uh...you've left the playing field and are kicking the ball in the parking lot.

A journalist was nearly blinded for covering the protests. How is he sub human filth?
