United Kingdom local elections (5/1/2025) thread

Nigel Farrage is the man of the day.
Meaningless chatter. He leads his private limited company/party of six MP's He's not reached the local government coverage that he did with UKIP, the previous incarnation. Arron Banks, one of his Brexit financiers, didn't manage to buy himself a Parliamentary seat in West of England despite pouring in resources.

Now you sounding like King Canute :). The Reform wave is surging all over the place; Tories and Labour are getting struck down; alarms are being raised in the media.. You just remain tranquil through it all

22 of 23 councils have declared.

Just waiting on West Northamptonshire.

Council by-election in gf's ward. Lib Dems won/retained seat. Reform came fourth but the nearest (quite pleasant) pub is now off our visiting list as they had a van with large Reform billboard with gurning Farage parked in the unused entrance to their front carpark in the past few days. Dumbasses.

Not really. Labour lost one council overall. The Conservatives have lost hugely to reform though.

this is going to be interesting at the next General Election as Reform and the Conservatives are going to be fighting over the same pool of voters. Moderate Conservatives however are not going to support either party

Lib Dems won/retained seat. Reform came fourth

I was listening to Jeremy Vine at lunchtime harping on about Reform to the Conservative and Lib-Dem politicians and the Lib Dem just said wait till the afternoon results as the Lib Dem support would show through. True enough, it happened but the headlines are all (again) about Reform.

This is Kemi Badenoch's death knell, only she doesn't realise it yet. The voters she would normally appeal to have all gone to the Conservatives and there will be a plot to replace her within 6 months.

Looks like the counting is done 23 of 23 councils reported.

Reform up 677, LibDems up 163, Greens up 45, Conservatives down 676, Labour down 186, Independents (others) down 20.

Total seats, Reform 677, LibDems 370, Greens 80, Conservatives 317, Labour 99, Independents (others) 89.

Reform up 10 councils, LibDems up 3 councils, Conservatives down 16 councils, Labour down 1 council, NOC up 4 councils.

Councils, Reform 10, LibDems 3, Conservatives 0, Labour 0, Greens 0, Independents (others) 0, NOC 10.

It is still possible in a couple of NOC councils that Conservatives could still organize them as minority governments, but for the most part in the NOC councils the Conservatives will at best be stuck as a junior partner to Reform in organizing the councils and in several will be out of power altogether.

Interesting! The Conservatives may have taken a sustained hit they may never recover from. Boris Johnson's Prime Ministership may have been fatal to the Tories. His successors did not fare better, but it seems like the harm was from Johnson. Do you think that was the case?

First past the goal post appears, going by today, to favour Reform against Conservatives

Try some reality. It can be bitter tasting for some.

Yes, Johnson killed the centre of the Conservative party, leaving only the Brexit camp.
The only real difference in policy between Reform and the Conservatives now is a recognition that Reform don't want to speak about which is that we needed migrant labour to work on farms, in care homes, in the NHS and other low pay jobs that Brits won't do. The Conservatives talked tough on migration but economic reality meant they didn't do anything about it. If Reform get into power - they will either do the same or find draconian ways to force Brits to do those jobs.

These are council elections, people don't vote tactically if at all but yes - in the low number of councils where there was voting, FTTP worked for Reform.

Farrage doesnt appear to found today bitter tasting at all

Course he won't, Reform now has 7 councils out of 317 councils in the UK and the press are talking about it like he's already Prime Minister. There's no questioning of his policy yet - his honeymoon with the media continues.

Only 200 more councillors and he'll have caught up with the Green Party!

Farage has the momentum, which is why he has been grinning from ear to ear

He's a frog faced populist with dark money funding. He's triumphed over winning 3.4% of council seats and two of six of the six mayoral ones. Here's one of his mayors
A Tory MP who lost her seat at the election and was given a damehood by departing Boris ****ing Johnson.

They do pick some dim bulbs for Reform don't they?

I should hope she does some homework before making any more moronic statements for the sake of Lincolnshire's residents but they were the ones who voted for her.

Complete article seems to be subscription but the intro to this 'Tory cataclysm edition' hits various nails on the head:

I'd forgotten that UKIP and Brexit Party both got to 24-30% vote share previously. This page has a good look at statistics and one chart shows (no surprise here) that "Reform is gaining the most support in areas where UKIP once had higher vote shares"

Still, just shows that the main parties have to work harder for people's vote but I still maintain that Reform have been getting a greater boost from publicity in comparison to their vote share than any of the other parties.

That, is undemocratic.

Wehave a lib council now as well as a lib mp. Its always been tory sinceI moved here 25 years ago.
Butit was the dullest low key election ever. I saw one green poster and thats it.
If the tories cant win here they are toast.
