In case you havent noticed, archeologists discoverd the gas chambers of the Nazi concentration camp Sobibor in Poland last week. Sobibor was a so called "death camp" similar to Auschwitz Birckenau, Treblinka and Mauthausen it`s function was mainly to murder it`s prisoners systematicaly on an industrial scale. The SS tried in most concentrationcamps to cover up it`s traces by destroying evidence. uncovering this evidence for crimes is still a very important task.

I am curious about how much you think, for Germany, historical events before the holocaust, and related events, where influenced by the trench warfare of WW1, with its massive casualties, and futile carnage, the final defeat and crushing terms of surrender, and then the great depression of the '30s. When people are pushed so far to the edge, radical priorities can emerge. But do they? Or do they in a regular manner?

Americans endured the great depression, and thought (incorrectly, but aided by a certain amount of spin) it was their own fault, and sucked it up. 9/11 Happened, and fire and brimstone was required to fly, not matter the consequences.

What is it that makes normal societies abandon civilized behavior?

Germany had been a militarized culture long before WW1, and in fact was just one flavor of progressivism in the era, like fascists and marxists.

I visited the death camp outside Munich. I spent some time on the West German Czech border at a camp that held Jews while they waited for transport to murder camps.

National Socialists proved to be just as evil as the International Socialists..

National Socialists proved to be just as evil as the International Socialists..

They are really just 2 different sides of the same coin. Just that one wants to be part of a world-wide movement, while the other wants to be the home of a movement in their own borders.

Now granted, not all National Socialist movements are bad. The Nationalist Chinese are National Socialist, but were nothing like many of the others have been, like the Nazi party or the Khmer Rouge. And while the Italians may have had issues, they also were not genocidal and bloodthirsty.

Of course, then you have the simply bizarre. Like the National Socialist League, a Nazi aligned National Socialist Party right here in the United States. This is rather a strange organization, since it is only open to Nazi's who are homosexuals.
