Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell announced the reduction Friday afternoon, citing "the significant steps we have made toward degrading ISIS' appeal and operational capability regionally and globally."

Zoom in: Three small operating bases in northeast Syria will be shuttered, the New York Times reported Thursday.

Yes, but: There's significant buildup elsewhere in Central Command, which oversees military operations across the greater Middle East.

  • Aircraft carriers Carl Vinson and Harry S. Truman are launching warplanes to combat Houthi rebels in Yemen.
  • Patriot air defenses were shifted to the region, away from the Indo-Pacific.
  • And B-2 bombers were dispatched to Diego Garcia, an island in the Indian Ocean.
By the numbers: The Pentagon in December disclosed there were roughly 2,000 troops in Syria — far more than the widely known 900.

Terrorism isn't a 'beat them and forget it' proposition. They have supporter all over the world more than willing to fight so-called American imperialism.

As a USN SeaBee we deployed twice to Diego Garcia in 1979 and 1980. We were still clearing jungle and living in hooches on the beach for 8 month tours. We were building the airfield and barracks for the Air Force.

It was isolated duty and very primitive.

Today its my understanding you pretty much have to re-enlist to get duty there. It's a tropical paradise but being 7 degrees off the equator the sun was brutal.

" Degrading ISIS "???............a former head of ISIS in Syria is now the de facto leader of the country.

I remain unconvinced that the "appeal and operational capability" of ISIS has been degraded, this looks to be more of Trump's withdraw from certain nations where Syria in particular is looking to Russia as a trading / supporting partner. This "Transition President" will end up with more ties to ISIS and Russia when it is all said and done.

shrug...

It makes sense.

Why keep troops in that country when the radical rebels have taken control? They'll just be a target.

Let the rebels...and Turkey...have it. (but keep a close eye on them)

Al Nusra which was branched off from Al Qaeda and was at odds with ISIS.

Your ignorance( denialism) is showing again

In 2011, Baghdadi sent Jolani to Syria with funding to establish al-Nusra Front, a covert faction tied to ISI. By 2012, Nusra had become a prominent Syrian fighting force, hiding its IS and al-Qaeda ties.

Tensions arose in 2013 when Baghdadi's group in Iraq unilaterally declared the merger of the two groups (ISI and Nusra), declaring the creation of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS), and publicly revealing for the first time the links between them.

Q. When is a jihadi not a jihadi ?

A. When it becomes convenient to the West and its allies, including Israel, to make the distinction without a difference.

Ties =/= Leadership of ISIS

" In 2011, Baghdadi sent Jolani to Syria with funding to establish al-Nusra Front, a covert faction tied to ISI"

I usually see the people who establish something as the leaders, I know, radical isn't it.

Your denialism is legendary

still got 1000 or so there.. we just are unable to walk away from globalism
