U.S. Navy Arrives at Scene of Hijacked American Ship

Thank you for saying that. I figure someone will be along shortly to dismiss you as an Obama hater or partisan hack. Obama's silence has been typical Obama - over his head. I have a friend who was wondering if Obama's going to apologize to the pirates and send them a boxed set of Sex and the City - The First Season on Dvd. Or maybe a block buster gift card. :ssst:

Because the impoverished have nothing else to turn to than violence-- I suppose.

The money spent on boats and guns could have been used to start a legitimate business with an inventory.

The last time a US ship was hijacked was more than 200 years ago. Our response was the Tripolitan War. After we kicked ass on those pirates, they did not hijack another American ship again.

Here's how we do it:

1) After this incident plays out, we keep sending merchant ships through the area. This is the bait.

2) We also deploy submarines that these pirates cannot see. As soon as the big ship lets loose the smaller pirate boats, torpedoes away, sinking the mother ship, with all crew aboard.

3) As for the small boats that have been let loose by the larger ship (that is now at the bottom of the ocean), the sub can surface, and the crew can have a little target practice fun, machine gunning anything still on the surface that is moving.

4) Piracy ends.

How about putting a few drones in the air in the area where the pirates seem to come from.

....because we are the world's policeman and it is our duty to make sure the rest of the world gets its diapers changed on a regular basis? Aren't we criticized and accused of pretending to be the world's policeman? Aren't we told by our "friends" that we should poke our noses into world affairs less? After all, the real threat to global peace is America; haven't you heard?

With the American Navy floating around the world guarding all the major shipping lanes and patrolling the oceans for American protection, maybe the glorious French..or China...or Russia...or Germany could do for the rest of the world "no matter what flag they fly" for a change.

I found it hugely ironic how the world jumped on the "I hate America" band wagon for years over a damn dictator we were supposed to continue falling over for and now looks towards America to solve yet another global issue for them. And if we do as the US Sailors and Marines did to the Barabary Pirates 200 years ago then we will merely be scoffed at for doing it for ourselves no matter how much the rest benefit under our wing.

Yes, the silence is deafening.

The garbage has nothing but themselves to blame. We were there to feed them and to stand them upright and they returned the world's good will with violence and mayhem. The strong man rules parts of Africa because the weak remain divided and afraid.

The "Barbary Pirates Wars" is a matter of Marine Corps History. It went from 1801-1815. The history is quite interesting. Although Britian, France, and Spain had strong enough navies to protect their shipping, they were fully occupied with the Napoleanic Wars (more of the same internal European civil strife the world is used to seeing). Instead they bought off the pirates with annual bribes (suprised?). Guess who couldn't afford that? The new United States of America! We refused to pay tribute and wound up seeing American hostages taken. President Jefferson stated, "Millions for defense, but not one cent for tribute!" Eventually we ventured into the world to protect our own.

Lt. Presley O'Bannon (famous in our history) and six other Marines trudged six hundred miles across the desert and managed to convince some 400 locals along the way to join and fight the pirate stronghold and they defeated them in the end. From this event... "....From the Shores of Tripoli" entered the Marine Corps Hymn. And the "Mameluke Sword" (the sword the Marine officer stills carries to this day) waxs presented to O'Bannon by Hamet, the exiled brother of the Bey of Tripoli.

Flash forward some 200 hundred years later to the year 2008 and we see so much of the same history repeating. Every nation is more than willing to deal with their individual issues with these pirates out of this region and willing to wait for somebody else to do the dirty work. And that somebody else is again the United States of America. We will eventually wind up doing what is in our best interest and wreck the home ports of these present day pirates and the rest of the world will benefit from our sweat and blood. The only difference will be that we will toss our "friends" a small less significant portion of the effort and call it an international effort. And those that don't participate will simply benefit from our actions while complaining and criticizing us for doing it for oursleves.

Quite historical and lesson intensive isn't it?

....give it up W.I. Crippler.....

So far Obama is doing exactly what I would have expected from him.
A Carter Re-run.

I don't expect him to do this. I expect him to do his diplomatic BS job until the hostage is released and then unleash holy terror upon specified targets as a warning and retribution. Nothing has deterred "the enemy" from harming American citizens than a good show of violence and display that we can get to anybody.

........There is a reason that Americans are the least messed with in these backwards nations. "Revenge" and lesson enforcement is something we do well when the cameras aren't rolling. I'm sure the rest of their pirate brood are swearing their names for crossing the line.

While I hope you are right I just dont see that happening. We are becoming a nation of cowards just lke the europeans that so many people in this country admire. I feel that our Goverments most important job is to protect our citizens. Every person that had anything to do with this needs to die. Let that be our lesson. The time for talk ended when they took a hostage.

It is American interests that were hit this time, so yes, America needs to get involved, and deliver another ass kicking to pirates on the high seas. Seems that they have forgotten the lesson we gave them a little over 200 years ago.

Here's to hoping that happens.

Remember the recapture of the USS Philidelphia by the first US Marines. The Philidelphia had been captured and its crew taken hostage. The crew was removed from the ship and taken to Tripoli. The Marines recaptured the ship which had run aground in the harbor then set fire to the ship so the muslem jihadist pirates could not use it against us. After this they went ashore and capturied the city of Tripoli. This took place on Febuary 16, 1804.

Really?

What entrepreneurship in Sudan is doing well...

I mean, besides Pirating.

And I wholeheartedly agree.

The fact of the matter is that the African world's mindset does not work like that of the Euro-Centric's. Studies have shown that they are a good amount different in terms of learning and understanding. They may not understand the terms that one might use to comprise "civility", though I am fairly hesitant to use that word.

That was before CNN, Al Jeezera, MSNBC, et al. would be able to make the United States forces look like butchers.

I don't forsee Obama launching attacks on Somali pirates, won't happen. It'd be great if he did, made it clear we won't tolerate such behavior, but Obama won't do it.

Not without the UN approving and supporting it, and they won't.

This brave captian will get hauled back to shore, and ransom will set him free, and that's how this plays out.

You forget the gauntlet the media will set for the Captain. Being taken to every single media organization and having to retell the story over, and over, and over again.

Honestly, I'd rather take my chances with Somali Pirates.

The following is a story that relates to todays muslim pirates. Thomas Jefferson learned how to deal with jihadist through war not appeasement.

A lesson can be learned from the way Jefferson handled jihadist pirates. Its been said before that those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. This is evident today as Europe, Russia, and others pay ransom to appease pirates. I agree with GySgt, we must attack the ports that these pirates use and put an end to this once and for all. But we should not have to do it alone, the Russians and Chinise should join us in this effort.

It is actually private companies that pay the ransoms and they do it for economic reasons.

And there is nothing holding back a private US company from paying a ransom.

Despite U.S. policy, nothing stops ransom payment, expert says - CNN.com

And here is a how to article on paying ransoms:

BBC NEWS | Africa | How do you pay a pirate's ransom?

Here is another intresting fact about this international incident. The Alabama was raided by jihadist pirates the U.S flagged cargo ship was cruising the Indian Ocean en route to Mombassa. The 21 Americans in the crew were trying to deliver tons of food and other agricultural materials for the World Food Program, to be distributed among destitute Muslims in that Kenyan port city, and beyond.

Thats right the evil Americans were delivering aid to African muslims. This brings to mind the aid to Africa that was tripled by President Bush. Something that Bush didn't get credit for from his political enemies and most of the world outside of Africa. In fact the United States has done more for human rights and aid to feed the worlds starving masses than any other nation on earth.

I think we do this whole African-Aid stuff all wrong to begin with. We drop it in their countries and expect them to share....
Hell no, Warlords make mad bank off of aide.

How do you sugest we do it? Have the military distribute it.

Well, 200 years ago, we didn't have a choice and the rest of the world reaped the benefits of our sweat and blood. Today, we do have a choice.

I am bitter over the fact that genocide in Europe goes unchecked until America sends its troops to sweat and bleed. I am bitter over the fact that America can be attacked with the guarantee that these same "friends" who ignored genocide in their own region complains over having to send more than the bare minimum and demands to be stationed far from the fight.

And now, after years of the world's nations (from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia), dumping toxic waste in the Somali waters, fishermen have been left with little choice as to livelyhood. Enter piracy and the lucrative wealth status that intices young black African men who have absolutely no opportunity for success any where else in their country (largely because their own people were dicks in 1993 - I was there by the way). America, if you can believe this, is innocent of this dumping. YET.....here we are having to deal with a world that they made, once again, and having to make it all better for us at our own expense and to there benefit.

The thanks will be grudgingly given by our "friends" only long enough to criticize us for our imperfections and whatever blame they can attribute towards us. .....and then it will be all about how we did what we did only for ourselves, while pretending that they don't cling to the table we have created.

Too bitter? That's the seasoned Jarhead in me.
