A spokesman for the Tamil Tigers called BBC Radio via Skype from, he said, a bunker inside the enclave. The spokesman charged that the government had killed 1,400 people, including “about 492 children,” in the past 24 hours. Obviously there is no way to verify if these numbers are accurate. The spokesman said that the casualty numbers came from “L.T.T.E. doctors” in the enclave. He also claimed that there were 300,000 civilians still in the enclave.

During the interview with the rebel spokesman, shelling could be clearly heard in the background, but it was not possible to determine whether the firing was incoming or outgoing. A spokesman for the Sri Lankan Army, Gen. Udaya Nanayakkara, denied that there was any government shelling and charged that the rebels themselves were killing civilians for propaganda purposes./QUOTE]
