Palmer Luckey's Anduril just gave the world an inside glimpse of its new project for the US Air Force — an uncrewed fighter jet that teams up with piloted aircraft. Unlike the Big Five US weapons manufacturers who build prototype weapons using Pentagon specs, Anduril builds its weapon platform from scratch and then endeavors to sell it to the Pentagon. A French firm is developing an alternative to the US-made HIMARS rocket and missile system as Europe works to reduce its reliance on the US and strengthen its defense industries and arsenals. Turgis Gaillard's new weapon, Foudre, is a long-range strike system that looks set to rival the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) made by US defense contractor Lockheed Martin. The French Foudre is a truck-mounted system is designed to be air-transportable and highly mobile, and it fires several types of precision-guided munitions with ranges between 46 and 621 miles, the company told Business Insider. If it works well in the air, it will be a massive force multiplier.

You can't build nor even design a unmanned fighter unless you know all the classified requirements. There's a difference between looking cool and functionally performing well.

You didn't actually read the article did you....

Anduril was chosen to compete for the program, but the Fury hasn't clinched the contract yet. Dubbed YFQ-44A by the Air Force, the aircraft is competing for the bid with General Atomics, which is also offering a drone with a modular design.

You still need qualified pilots to fly these unmanned aircraft

Plus if they're unmanned, then control is vulnerable.

No you don’t. CCA are autonomous loyal wingmen. That is why we have artificial intelligence.

No it isn’t. They are autonomous.

I'm always amazed at how confidently incorrect people can be. LOL! The information to answer both @Rich2018 and @dmpi is contained in the article in the op. It's not even a very long article.

Absolutely you do
You don't have a multi-million dollar aircraft that flies without no human control. AI isn't that good yet, nor should we want it to be

The article you cited does not refer to gen 6 aircraft
One major feature, of a gen 6 aircraft, is that it can control a small number of accompanying, unmanned aircraft. So for example, if the gen 6 aircraft detects a high value target, it doesn't need to attack it directly, it can assign this task to one of its accompanying automated aircraft.

That is not a defining characteristic of Gen 6 aircraft. Gen 5 can be retrofitted to direct loyal wingmen.

And BTW, Ai is being developed today on surrogate aircraft and hopefully will be ready when CCA is fielded.

Well there is no definitive criteria for a gen 6 aircraft - or any other aircraft generation

The commonly accepted criteria though does include the ability to control "loyal wingman", AI controlled aircraft:

5. Self-sustained operation is a feature of 6th-generation fighter aircraft. The aircraft will have the ability to operate as optionally manned and autonomous platforms, which will grant military forces greater operational flexibility. Autonomous systems based on AI will enable fighter aircraft to perform sophisticated missions with less human intervention, reducing pilot fatigue and response times. The “Loyal Wingman” concept will also play a significant role, where autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles operate in coordination with manned fighter aircraft, performing reconnaissance, electronic warfare, and combat missions. This will enable human pilots to focus on high-level strategic decision-making while AI-powered systems carry out the tactics. Autonomous systems will not only maximize the success of missions but also risk fewer human lives during combat.

Note these autonomous, AI controlled "loyal wingmen" are NOT 6th gen aircraft in themselves, but rather they are controlled by a 6th gen aircraft

6 gen aircraft will be controlled by human pilots (whether on-board or at a remote location), and estimated to have a cost in excess of $100m each. The "loyal wingmen" will cost nothing like that and be relatively expendable.

Unfortunately, it appears China is ahead of us in the unmanned drones being controlled by manned fighters.

Do you honestly think the F-47 was not flying for years prior to the announcement?
Absolutely not.

The first flight is not scheduled until between 2025 and 2029.

They didn't even award the contract to build it until recently and if they had it secretly under development the other aircraft manufacturers wouldn't have spent billions developing prototypes for the competition for the contract.

The J-36 is a sixth-generation stealth fighter with a focus on air superiority, long-range strike capabilities, and advanced networking capabilities. It features a hybrid air intake system, advanced sensors, and enhanced stealth technologies, aiming to dominate multi-domain battle environments. The J-36 is also designed for manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) with the ability to control loyal wingman drones.

They will have had years perfecting this before our first flight is even up and running.

Estimates are that China is going for Taiwan sometime around 2030 meaning this jet is specifically designed for that conflict and will be ready while ours will not be.

Biden dropped the ball on this.

Absolutely not.

You obviously are not familiar with the DoD Acquisition process.

That, in no way, is a "done" (UAV).
No, that is the jet that will be controlling UAVs not only for ground assaults but for ariel protection.

It's the same plan we have for the F-47, they are just way ahead as theirs is already flying.

Then please explain it.
NGAD X-plane prototypes were flying back in 2019 according to this article.

To describe the effort behind the two demonstrators, DARPA quoted the statement from Chief of Staff of the Air Force Gen. David Allvin: “For the past five years, the X-planes for this aircraft have been quietly laying the foundation for the F-47 — flying hundreds of hours, testing cutting-edge concepts, and proving that we can push the envelope of technology with confidence.”

Who's currently testing a finished model?

The F-47 is at least five years away from that.

What the Government says, and what the Government has may be two different things; the world at large never heard of the Manhattan project which began in 1939, and remained secret until Hiroshima and Nagasaki were destroyed in 1945.

The F 117 Nighthawk stealth fighter first flew in 1981 and remained secret until the US admitted its existence in 1988...it was used in combat for the first time over Panama a year later.

I am not saying that the F 47 exists as a fully functional platform, but I wouldn't be surprised if a prototype testbed is already assembled somewhere....DARPA has a long history of working on black projects and they do not advertise.

I hope you are correct because when the shooting starts we will be at a significant disadvantage in that theater over the Pacific if they have it and we don't.
