Monday’s indictment on racketeering charges of Democratic power broker George E. Norcross III by state Attorney General Matt Platkin caps a series of blows to influential figures in the state’s dominant political party and adds to a sense of turbulence in the blue-state stronghold.

There’s the ongoing federal bribery case against Democratic Sen. Bob Menendez, who’s pleaded not guilty in a New York trial that has consistently delivered glimpses of the tawdry underbelly of Garden State politics. There’s the fall this year of a century-old, unique-to-New Jersey primary ballot system that allowed party bosses to give preferred placement to endorsed candidates.

And now there’s the indictment of Norcross, who Platkin said stepped across legal lines in orchestrating tax benefits for entities he controlled. Norcross angrily denied doing anything wrong.

Some more corrupt bastards being handled the right way. It's well past time that we've given passes to political leaders and shysters just because of the positions they hold. From Trump on down, every corrupt politician should be charged and properly punished, if that includes jail time then they should get it. Though I still doubt that these folks will get jail time, particularly high up politicians.

If we gotta make a new jail just for all the politicians we lock up, so be it.

+1 for you Ikari.

May the charges and the trial be squeaky clean, transparent and as tight as a drum, unassailable and unquestionable by anyone for any reason.

Well "by anyone for any reason" is a shit standard as any partisan dumb**** can then be like "this isn't fair" blah blah blah.

So I will take that the charges be supported by fact, evidence, and in accordance with the laws of State and Republic.

You don't like a high bar like that for the State to prove it's case?
Why not?
Yes, I know the legal standard is 'beyond a reasonable doubt'.
High profile cases demand more, don't they?

But of course.

You weren't talking about a high bar, you were essentially talking of no bar, just an infinite barrier. "unassailable and unquestionable by anyone for any reason" is a ****ed standard. You couldn't even get that with "the earth is round".

The State must make their case, they must prove to a jury beyond a reasonable doubt that the accused committed the crimes. That is the standard. If there is evidence that politicians are committing crimes, then they should be charged and brought before a jury. If convicted, they should be appropriately punished including jail time should that be part of the punishment. That's it. And we should be investigating far more politicians than we do, and any wrong doing should be appropriately punished.

You are arguing that a politician should be harder to convict for a crime than a typical American.

Perhaps not so much a standard as aspirational?

You couldn't even get that with "the earth is round".
🤷‍♂️

Yes, as was contained in my post.

No argument from me.

I'm sure the political elites would provide fertile ground for such investigations and indictments of wrongdoing.

I'm arguing that cases need to be squeaky clean and tight as a drum, so that the public doesn't get ideas of favoritism, unequal application of law, or any other shenanigan's from those cases, and this is especially so for high profile cases.

As we have seen, anything short of that isn't good for the nation nor it's peoples, nor it's institutions.

Almost assuredly the political elites would be a target rich environment, it seeps down through all levels, but start there.

Trump got busted, Hunter got busted, we have these Jersey politicians being brought up on the law. Don't stop. There's been far too much corruption running through government and our political parties. Get them all, I say.

Just because some people are dumb enough to believe Trump's "lawfare" bullshit, does not mean that we all of a sudden need a different standard of justice for politicians than we have for everyone else.

A high profile case and trial such as that one needed to be squeaky clean, transparent and as tight as a drum, unassailable and unquestionable by nearly anyone for nearly any reason.

Do you believe that's what happened in that case and trial?

I think that is what happens in the vast, vast majority of criminal trials.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is the Poster Boy. If anyone deserves a thread he does along with the Republican Party, not exclusively the Democratic Party of a blue state. Texas abortion laws the AG enforces are cruel and life threatening to women and scary to their families. Democratic politicians in NJ are harmless relatively speaking. They're busy trying to get their own people elected, not trying to kill the people in their state and wreck their families as Paxton is doing among a swarm of other Republicans in red states.

One would certainly hope so.

But we both know that this didn't happen in this high profile case, now, did it?

Trump got a fair trial. In fact, considering how much he attacked the judge and his family, Trump got a fairer trial than the vast majority of defendants would have received had they conducted themselves the same way.

The trial by Trump is best summarized by:
On a made up claim well beyond the statue of limitations elevated to federal crime...well, just because.
Yes, you are right he is very guilty of what they charged. The jury had no clue it was about election interference btw.
. . .
I'm sure you will disagree, but I don't really care if you do, we are talking reality here, not what you want to believe.

If you want to vote for a criminal, it's your right to do so. I just wish y'all would man up and own it.

As I've posted many times here for a long time already, I'm one of the electorate that didn't want to re-match.
