The Belarusian opposition has called for a general strike across the country on October 26 to step up the pressure on Alyaksandr Lukashenka to step down after the strongman defied an ultimatum to surrender power by midnight on October 25, setting security forces upon protesters instead. Opposition leader Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya called for the strike to go ahead after the crackdown on protests in Minsk and other cities on October 25, which saw riot police use stun grenades and rubber bullets against tens of thousands of protesters in the capital, Minsk, and other cities across Belarus. Hundreds were detained. On October 26, more than 1,000 pensioners and hundreds of university students marched in Minsk, demanding Lukashenka's resignation. Similar protests took place in other cities. Workers at some industrial facilities across the country continued their strikes on October 26. An unknown number of protesters were detained during the day. Belarus has been rocked by protests since Lukashenka, in power since 1994, was declared the winner of the country’s August 9 presidential election amid allegations of widespread vote-rigging. In addition to Lukashenka’s resignation, the opposition movement is calling for an end to police violence, the release of all political prisoners, and a new election. A UN human rights investigator said last month that thousands of people had been "savagely beaten" and there were more than 500 reports of torture, which the authorities deny.
One way or the other, this is where the rubber meets the road. Wishing all success to the Lukashenka opposition and freedom-loving Belarussian's.
