The trumpet ministration is currently navigating legal waters not faced by the White House since the Nixon administration. And yet apparently that does is not keeping Mr. Trump from watching his favorite friends on Fox News and basing foreign policy on what he hears there.

I have asked Secretary of State @SecPompeo to closely study the South Africa land and farm seizures and expropriations and the large scale killing of farmers. 'South African Government is now seizing land from white farmers' @TuckerCarlson @FoxNews‚" Trump tweeted.

Early in the 20th century, under Apartheid policies, much land was seized from black farmers and given to whites. The South African government is now looking into ways to right that wrong. There are debates and discussions on this currently in the South African government for how best to do this.

But consistent with his previous views on African countries all being ****hole countries, of Nazis and KKK rallies being “good People”, Mr. Trump has felt it necessary to wade into South African politics to protect the good white people who benefited from such policies in the past- all from the info he got while watching Carl Tuckerson.

With such carefully researched and well thought out policy positions, taking the time to closely consult with our intelligence officials and diplomatic professionals all over the world, what could go wrong?

Trump is an utter and complete contemptible fool willing to jump into anything with both feet including another country's politics and blather on about them. Bad enough that he does it here, utterly contemptible that he does it to other countries.

Asking Pompeo to look into it is simply Trump using the government for his own contemptible purposes. Go ahead Donald, keep raking up those abuses of power.

Parroting white supremacists with his tweet and putting Pompeo onto to this because he heard it on Tucker is frightening. Maybe he should get his intel from his "best people."

It is disturbing indeed; POTUS seems to Tweet regularly after seeing something on FOX. He won’t be making the Lester Holt mistake anytime soon. White House is disproportionately represented by ex Fox News people.

I hate to agree with Omorosa but 45 is unhinged.

A more balanced account of SA 'land reform'. IE taking land away from farmers without compensation. South Africa is in the process of becoming a new, much bigger, Zimbabwe.

I got the impression that the OP was more about the fact that the American President was weighing in on matters in another county, than on whether the SA politics are right or wrong. Maybe I missed the point in the OP.

Ok. First things first. It isn’t racist to look at Africa objectively and say it is a **** hole. The same could be said for certain white or Asian or Latin American nations. They are a resource rich area that is exploited by Chinese, Islamic, and Western involvement. They have been for the past few hundred years. I mean can you look objectively at the area and say it is a booming thriving continent filled with wonderful human rights and innovations that are seen nowhere else in the world? Objectively it is not a nice place to live. That isn’t racist. That’s just a reality. And it doesn’t even mean it couldn’t be.

Second. South Africa is going to be a cluster ****. And I can’t say the whites there didn’t bring it on themselves. Between diamonds and land theft? But the blacks of South Africa need to be VERY careful about how they handle all of this. They need to make sure to keep their exports stable. Agriculture is the biggest historical benefit of South Africa and it is really the best area on the continent for ag. Plus the diamond trade.

This is going to be interesting. China, USA, Germany and other major world powers will be invested in the outcome of this. Even India. These nations will not want the area to destabilize. But certain ideals are not good for economic stabilization and one of those is “redistribution of wealth.” Not exactly a business friendly concept. And the people of South Africa have a lot to lose.

Actually, just a slight correction: "...the American President was weighing in on matters in another county"... BASED on stuff he just heard on cable news TV. No research. No curiosity. No sophisticated analysis. No consulting with our ambassador or diplomats there. No being briefed by the state department on the issue. Nope. Just Carl Tuckerson. Cable TV.

I mean, does this guy really not have any better sources to help craft foreign policy decisions and thinking on? What's next? The National Enquirer?

Have you ever gone there? Many countries there are really not that bad. I have a distant family member, an engineer, who lives there with his family now (in Gambia). He can't say enough nice things about it. Of course, he has money, and his kids go to a nice private school. One of them just finished high school there and got into a very selective college back here in the states. Another may be going to Oxford next year. He has several maids and butlers. He says the people are very warm and friendly. He feels very safe. He is having a great time. He is involved with a lot of infrastructure construction in the country, and says it is booming.

The economic forecast for most of Sub-Saharan Africa is looking pretty good.

It is a very complex issue, and anyone with any sense of recent history (Zimbabwe comes immediately to mind) would advise the government of South Africa to approach it delicately. I think they've done a pretty balanced job throughout most of the post-apartheid era.

But let us not pretend that this is anything but red meat for Trump's hounds. Trump, in all his miserable life, has never weighed in on apartheid, AIDs, Ebola, numerous genocides, countless wars, famine, or any of the miseries visited upon the people of Africa during the Colonial and post-Colonial period. Now he's wading into the White Nationalist issue du jour with almost none of the facts. Wide-scale redistribution hasn't even been settled on, let alone implemented. And "farm killings" are, as of 2018, at a post-apartheid low.

Just more kabuki theatre for his domestic audience. Trump couldn't find RSA on a map and he hasn't even appointed an ambassador 20 months into his tenure.

you cannot make this **** up.

Yes. Rich people exist even in poor nations. Economies can be projected to grow from dog crap to just plain awful.

I’m not saying Africa CANNOT be a nice place to live. But it has to overcome a few hundred years of destabilizing issues. They have resources and unique places. But that doesn’t mean it hasn’t been a 3rd world region for centuries. It is going to take a while. And very careful planning and long term goals. That isn’t easy in today’s world. Especially with heavy involvement from outside nations.

2 responses. One more realistic than another:

Why should we care about brown people being victimized in non American nations? If you think we shouldn’t: you are golden. Your view is consistent.

But on a serious note? Money. South Africa is a stable region in Africa. We have benefited economically. China has as well. So has Germany. So you can extrapolate from that why it matters. Economics matter in this day of foreign policy where you can’t just go in and take the resources for yourself. They have lots of gold and other minerals. :

Sure, OK. But the point here is: why does the president of the United States issue opinions and propose policy positions immediately after what he hears on cable TV? It doesn't seem to say much about the level of sophistication of the information or decision making going on in the whitehouse right now.

Are you saying it is not happening or that it is not worth looking into?

Isn't telling his guy to look into it the research you are looking for?

Funny how intent is really how we should be judging Trump over a broad spectrum of Trumpian activities since intent can lead to some very bad outcomes. Given the text of that tweet, Trump's intent is entirely wrongheaded and self serving. So NO, Pompeo should not do a darn thing. Make a phone call maybe.
"Hi.....Pompeo over here...you guys OK over there?......... "You are....OK by"

Because foreign policy is not a strong suit for most Americans presidents. We generally don’t elect them on that basis. Obama? Bush? Clinton was ok. But still.

This President does not have a strong suit unless you want to consider rampant Corruption and sowing civil discord strong suits. He is a bombastic idiots with bombastic idiots and loons for an administration with about two, count them two exceptions.

So basically he is a federal politician? A government worker? Is the nation hurdling towards collapse? Are we losing our rights daily? Honestly? What lasting impact has he had on the American people? Irreversible in any form? Meh. I mean he hasn’t saddled us with a crappy and poorly thought out social security plan. He hasn’t dropped a crappy health care plan in our laps. Didn’t get us involved in a quagmire of a war for 17 years.

He may be an “ass hat,” but he is pretty mild as far as real impact. I’d rather a president have no strong suits and no impact. It works better

So basically he is a federal politician? A government worker?

Yes. But not a good one.

Is the nation hurdling towards collapse?

With all the trade wars, the race baiting, the undermining of intelligence and law enforcement, the relentless attacks on the free press, etc, ... yes.

Give him time. He is still riding the economic coat tails of the Obama years. Bush Jr. needed about 8 years to land us in two intractable foreign wars and the biggest economic recession in our history.

Yes. But not a good one.

A good government worker???? Is that like the Easter bunny?

With all the trade wars, the race baiting, the undermining of intelligence and law enforcement, the relentless attacks on the free press, etc, ... yes.

Always have been all of those. And the free press? They bring that on themselves. They are still printing their stupidity every day. And the race baiting? Talk to democrats about that.

Give him time. He is still riding the economic coat tails of the Obama years. Bush Jr. needed about 8 years to land us in two intractable foreign wars and the biggest economic recession in our history.

Wow. You blame Bush for the recession that happened during his presidency? But it is Obama’s who responsible for our growing economy? Lol.

Sorry man. Recession was due to short sighted laws and banking and a bad system. We have ups and downs in capitalism. Doesn’t matter who is in office. And bush had no choice but to get us into war the first time. The second one was on him. Seriously. You didn’t expect a war after 9/11? Or do you blame Bush and that as an inside job? Even though bonbings started during Clinton? Lol

The reality here is that Trump is not going to make a huge difference. As long as he doesn’t drop an irreversible cluster **** in our lap like obama or bush or FDR.
