Trump tells Commerce Department to begin work on new census to only count citizens

Well, as if gerrymandering in the middle of a cycle in TX and now possibly other states is not enough to keep the GOP from losing the midterms, seems Trump wants a brand new census with only US citizens counted.



Legally, he cannot do this, because Article 1 Section 2 of the 14th Amendment says "counting the whole number of persons in each State", which has always been interpreted as everyone residing in the US.

The Census Act also governs how the Census is conducted, and the president does not have the authority to change the 10 year cycle.

He tried this before during his first term and it got nowhere, but SCOTUS is now in his back pocket so who knows?
 
Trump and the Republicans believe immigrants are subhuman and thus not persons.
 
Aw the poor baby must have had a nightmare about illegals being counted in the census and had to jump on social media early this morning to make him feel better. It's like his binky to soothe his toddler soul.
 
SCOTUS will simply declare that non- citizens are not persons, and thus not to be counted. Will of course have other implications. In which other laws are the word "person" used?

The only outcome from this would be causing harm via decrease of funding for the poorest people in largely red states like Florida, Louisiana, Texas, etc.

Where there services and funding, etc could be even further slashed for healthcare and education.

I would have thought it would be even more important to have accurate counts of undocumented people in the country, regardless of whether you count them when considering electoral procedures. Excluding them from the census entirely makes no sense at all.

Why bother, since “mass deportation” should solve (or at least significantly reduce) that problem by 2030? Since even legal immigrants (being non-US citizens) can’t vote, why count any non-US citizens?
 
Is there appropriation from Congress for this action or is he going to fund it by declaring a National Emergency?

Like his much used phrase “fake news” such a census would be a fake census.

Trump and the Commerce Department are going to have to become really clever at altering the census to not count "those here illegally" but who happened to be in largely Republican leaning states. Contrary to popular right wing belief, they were not all out in California or somewhere in New York.

The primary purpose of the census has nothing to do with voting.

We need to know how many people actually live in our towns and cities in order to properly manage our infrastructure. Non citizens still drive on our roads, drink water, eat food, use electricity and gas, require housing, medical care, and sewage treatment. And so on. Ignoring millions of people for purely political reasons is a great way to end up overloading critical infrastructure systems. And that hurts everyone. It is idiotic and shortsighted.

Because the US Constitution says to count them.

Consider this possible scenario:

Trump manages to pull this off. The counting of non-citizens is widely disputed, so the red states only count citizens, but the blue states count all persons as it says in the Constitution. Then the red states get less representation in the House than the Blue states. Whoops.
