“It will come down substantially but it won’t be zero,” Trump said Tuesday in Washington, following earlier comments from Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent that the standoff was unsustainable. Trump added that “we’re going to be very nice and they’re going to be very nice, and we’ll see what happens.”

Trump also said he didn’t see the need “play hardball” with Chinese leader Xi Jinping and that during discussions he wouldn’t raise Covid-19 — an issue that is politically sensitive in Beijing. The White House recently launched a website that suggested the virus came from a lab in China, irking the nation’s diplomats.

Meanwhile, trade representatives from Japan recently returned to their homeland, without even a framework of a deal, scratching their heads about what, exactly, Trump wants.

Not even one-dimensional chess.

I guess Trump found out all his MAGA gear was going to be way more expensive and cut into his profits.

And, Ivanka, his daughter who has been curiously not involved with her dad's administration this time around, called him to let him know that HER Chinese clothes manufacturing business - and related patents (which were "fast-tracked" for approval by the Chinese Govt.) are losing value fast.

Not to forget Boeing. Since Chinese Airlines are already refusing delivery of Boeing planes.

Then again, so are European Carriers.

However I have it on good authority that we are winning.

It is pretty obvious that the serious damage that Trumps stupidity has caused has finally sunk into his thick skull. Most likely hammered in by a parade of his wealthy donors telling him that he is doing immense harm to their businesses. Whether Trump actually understands what he has done is questionable because he us so damn fiscally illiterate, but he does like to show off his 'power' to people, and I suspect that is what he is doing now. Pissed off CEO's telling Trump the harm he is doing, and Trump saying that he can easily fix that for them. What Trump can't so easily fix though is the massive distrust of the US and it's govt that he has created. Distrust by other countries. Distrust by US companies and others thinking of starting businesses in the US, and most of all, distrust by US consumers who are now worried about losing their jobs, and seeing interest rates rise as Trumps inflation starts to get out of hand. To the economic damage, add in the awful stuff happening around immigration, and the out of control DOGE. Now also people across the political spectrum becoming concerned that Trumps is trying to form an authoritarian govt where he can just do whatever he wants.

So while the seemingly slightly more sane approach to tariffs might be good for now, much of the actual real harm has already been done. And most of that can't be simply undone by more crazy Trumpspeak. And to achieve what?

Trump wants whatever stupid idea one of his subordinates puts in his head. The art of the deal, yeah great businessman.

Just after meeting with Target and Walmart CEO's .....spank! Xi has played him beautifully.

The lesson is against any and all forms of government central planning, and really has nothing to do with Trump.

The same people criticizing Trump over the tariffs applauded Biden for doing the same thing.

Trump tells China "So sorry, never mind".

Nice spin. Too bad it's not true.

I haven't heard anything about Trump removing or reducing a single tariff that he has placed on China.

Such a thing might happen once they start talking and making deals, but it hasn't happened yet.

You'll defend him when he does.

Strategic, targeted tariffs to protect or encourage a specific industry are an effective tool. Shot gun approach not so much.

Wrong.

Taxing consumers and reducing their choices in order to prop up failing industries is not an "effective tool". All tariffs are a dumbass form of central planning, end of story. You want to argue that central planning improves our lives, then good luck, you're going to need it, given its mile long track record of failure.

Mycroft always lies, and he seriously thinks he's going to gaslight everyone into thinking they don't see the words that are on the page. Disgusting.

In the Oval Office on Tuesday, the president also said 145% tariffs on China are “very high.” “It won’t be that high,” Trump said. “It will come down substantially. But it won’t be zero. It used to be zero.”

Tariffs on Chinese imports will likely to drop to roughly 50%-65%, a White House official said. Photo: Justin Sullivan/Getty Images
The Trump administration is considering slashing its steep tariffs on Chinese imports—in some cases by more than half—in a bid to de-escalate tensions with Beijing that have roiled global trade and investment, according to people familiar with the matter.
President Trump hasn’t made a final determination, the people said, adding that the discussions remain fluid and several options are on the table.
One senior White House official said the China tariffs were likely to come down to between roughly 50% and 65%. The administration is also considering a tiered approach similar to the one proposed by the House committee on China late last year: 35% levies for items the U.S. deems not a threat to national security, and at least 100% for items deemed as strategic to America’s interest, some of the people said. The bill proposed phasing in those levies over five years.

Oh right, and the giant idiot flopped on firing Powell

We have to live in the world as it is. The best world would have no tariffs at all. We agree on that.

In the real world China trades unfairly. In response, the U.S. can either refuse to trade with them altogether, or we could impose targeted tariffs to ameliorate the worst effects of China's policy.

Trump basically chose the first course, which was totally stupid. Biden chose the second course, which was making the best of an unfortunate situation.

Pretending there is no difference between Biden and Trump's trade policies is untenable.

As we all know, the OP didn't claim that Trump had actually reduced tariffs on China.

Mycroft, in a pathetic attempt to push back against a thread that gives you heartburn, you failed to spin the OP into making a claim it obviously did not.

I wish, but unfortunately, tariffs are supported when the idiot imposing them is a democrat.

Bullshit. This is what Trump believes, and it's completely wrong.

If China subsidizes the production of bicycles, the result is lower bicycle prices for American consumers. There is nothing "unfair" about lower prices. Same thing when it manipulates its currency. Who gives a shit what they do? You can't call it "unfair" when 330 million American consumers are benefiting enormously from it.

Protectionism is for losers. I don't give a shit about American capitalists and neither should you. If they can't compete, then they can die or go do something else.

Farmers and small business owners, the vast majority of whom voted Trump for president, are now suing him over halted grant money and agricultural tariffs, claiming his use of "emergency powers" to do so is only so much bullshit.

Tariffs are supported by me when they make sense. And sometimes, like protecting national security, they do.
Bullshit. This is what Trump believes, and it's completely wrong.
Oh dear. Having a dyspeptic morning, are we?
That China historically and currently flouts international trade norms is what most individuals who know anything about economics know.

Determining a nation's net benefit involves a few more complications than your simplistic black and white world allows.

Protectionism is a broad-brush term implying a bias toward autarky. I've never advocated for it.
