First, it is absurd to suppose one can make a "deal" over something that cannot be unarguably verified on a timely basis. Suspicion over stealing technology or US secrets is both inferential and delayed. By the time the US finds out for sure, their products and weapons are on the market years later.

Second, access to markets is almost equally difficult to prove as numerous regulations, process delays, and excuses can be invented and again, only later, determined to have been without merit.

Third, the bottom line is they will or they won't. If they do not it is only after the fact that we can "punish" China by buying less, which is also punishing ourselves.

My view is that EXCEPT for strategic industries (eg chip manufacturing) we should take advantage of their willingness to sell us anything at low prices. Trade deficits don't matter.

Regarding Trump we don't even have a written deal or a signature of any type.

Regarding Bidens orders we have a written executive order and a signature.

When Trump releases a written deal with the signatures of both parties, and someone wants proof Trump signed or authorized it - well, then you can carp that its ridiculous to require 100 percent proof.

Well, it's not made yet and nothing laid out thus far is a "win" since it's basically a return to the status quo except with a 55% tariff on Chinese imports that consumers will be affected by. Oh, and we get rare earth minerals like we were getting before, and Chinese students can come back to US universities like they were before. It's hard to claim this as a victory when it's essentially undoing the idiocy done by starting a trade war with China.

And he is so "rational". A month ago he started to revoke visas for Chinese students in the U.S., because of extreme National Security Concerns. He and Rubio targeted Chinese students with connections to the CCP and/or those in the science and stem areas. Trump told us they were a serious risk for espionage, intellectual property theft, and advancing China’s military-industrial complex through access to American research and technology.

The Chinese cut off essential rare earth minerals to the US.

Trump essentially says "Never mind, I guess they weren't as serious as national concern as I thought".

Chinese reply, "then rare earths will no longer be cutoff."

Trump announces victory because he is such as great "deal maker"...LOL.

In the meantime, it appears the alleged agents for Red China will be returning to pilfer our science and technology.

Regarding the Chinese students, I chuckled at his social media post announcing the "deal" where he stated Chinese students can come back to US universities and it was something he never had a problem with. So much for the security threat. This reminds me of his flip flopping on TikTok, where one day it should be banned because it's a security threat and not too long after we should not enforce the legislation to ban it.

I'm still trying to get a sense of how to characterize this deal, particularly in the context of all that's happening with the US and other trading partners. It seems like this isn't really intended to be a long-term deal but like the previous pause, both sides are using this as a way to calm tensions but are still feeling each other out.

China and the US are basically giving each other time to feel more pain and seeing which side buckles first. Both sides might be willing to give some ground periodically, as their situation dictates. Xi believes that the pressure of elections is going to force Trump to submit, and similarly, Trump/MAGA believes that disruption to China's exports will lead to an unemployment crisis that it will have to respond to, which kind of explains why allowing Chinese students to attend school in the US is relevant in all this, at least from the US side, though I think these students would be studying abroad somewhere.

It looks like we will have access to Chinese rare earths for six months, but that's not going to give us nearly enough time to develop processing infrastructure -- that takes years, even if we build it at Manhattan Project speed/scale. China seems to be attaching conditions, though, requesting sensitive IP data from the companies who purchase/use their rare earths.
