President-elect Trump said he spoke with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, saying she has agreed to "stop Migration through Mexico, and into the United States" following threats this week to significantly tariff goods from coming into the U.S. from its southern neighbor.

Trump vowed to impose 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada if both nations failed to do more to stop the flow of illegal immigrants and drugs into the U.S. Sheinbaum, who recently took office, said on Wednesday that Mexico would retaliate if Trump followed through on his promise.

Trump says a lot of stupid shit

I am not a MAGA man, but I will give credit where credit is due. It is not stupid to use economics to enforce other political objectives. If MAGA Jesus can actually get Mexico and other countries to meaningful interdict the flow of migrants northward to the extent that it noticeably mitigates border crossings, that puts less pressure on him to do the dirty work of mass incarcerations and deportations.

I already know I'm going to be accused of being a secret MAGA. I am not. But I am going to note that tariffs can be used strategically as statecraft.

Step one in unwinding this multi-year migrant disaster. My thinking is Mexico was sick of the migrant caravan too and they just needed an excuse to stop it without making them look like the bad guy.

If I read things correctly, what the Mexican President really said was that caravans were already being stopped. If true, what Trump has really done is create another false 'win' by claiming that he has personally caused something that was already in place. Very true to form for Trump, and the maga cult love him for it. Absolutely zero care however about how much damage he did to global markets and international relations with his careless attempt at self gratification via wetting maga panties.

As I have already posted elsewhere, I can argue with ideology, but I cannot argue with results. If he is committing states to change how they behave, then he is using tariffs not for purely macroeconomic objectives but for broader political objectives, and he is, for the moment, succeeding.

I wonder how many calls from Trumps wealthy industrial donors, who stood to lose a lot, it took before Trump started looking for a way to reverse his crazy tariff stance? He already had his headlines, so now he just needed to create a story about how he 'won' so he could pull back from the crazy.

As I said before, that doesn't mean Mexico has no leverage, and I suspect what we will begin to see is Mexico begin to look for ways to distance itself from the US over time. For now, however, Mexico and Canada are America's bitch. That fate was sealed back in the early-1990s. That can change over time, of course.

nothing in here solely about caravans.. In fact Sheinbaum said her "comprehensive strategy is "assisting migrants and caravans before they reach the border" (I read that as Mexico's southern border -but it's not clear)

In a post on X, Sheinbaum said she explained the "comprehensive strategy" Mexico has employed to address the "the migration phenomenon, respecting human rights."

"Thanks to this, migrants and caravans are assisted before they reach the border," she wrote. "We reiterate that Mexico's position is not to close borders but to build bridges between governments and between peoples."

Firstly, it appears that Trumps Tariff plan didn't actually achieve anything. It just gave Trump the ability to claim credit for something that was already in place. Always, always, always treat any claims like this from Trump with a high degree of suspicion.

Secondly, the USMCA trade agreement is the 2nd largest in the world, but includes only one moderately fast growing economy (Mexico). The third largest Trade Agreement in the world CPTPP is smaller in $'s but includes slightly more people, and more of the worlds fastest growing economies. Mexico and Canada are both members of that CPTPP agreement. Of course everyone wants to trade into the worlds largest single market (the US), but if USMCA was to be broken, both Canada and Mexico do have already developing new trade relationships that they can immediately start building new trade through. It won't replace USMCA in the next 5 minutes, but given a bit of time I imagine both countries will reduce their reliance on US trade. The other issue for the US of course is that where do they get what they currently get from Canada and Mexico on the same or better terms? Of course the maga mantra is that everything will then be grown/built in the US, but that ignores so many factual realities that it is hard to credit that any thinking person takes that claim seriously.

My expectation is that both Canada and Mexico will work hard to diversify their exports away from the unreliable US. That is what companies do when facing crazy and unreliable politics. Neither C or M would have major issues sourcing most of their imports from outside the US, although extra transport costs may impact price, but not as much as huge tariffs.

What is scary about this is that Trump is able to use a completely crazy story about US jobs to generate a lot of voter support around really harmful tariffs, when the reality is that those same voters will be the ones suffering if Trump does what he says he will do. Miniscule upside vs massive downside for the average voter. Feels a bit like a Zombie world where Trump is the brain dead Zombie leader.

right now Biden is still the problem with his migrant flights and phoneAp letting them thru at points of entry and continuous direct flights into our interior

So when Trump ends both of those (and asylum and parole abuse) the pressure will be on Mexico to stop the migrants coming by land.
This looks like the Mexican president is not going to let millions come thru Mexico.

Then start deporting the migrant criminals,, and start to clean up Bidens mess
