There are several threads dealing with discrete issues on this same subject - the leak of grossly racist discussions by Republican congressional staffers, the defense of this racism by the Vice President, the blatantly racist activities of ICE, Trump's attacks on black mayors, his favoring white immigrants, his acceptance and even lauding of noted racists, and the effort to dismantle the Voting Rights Act and redistricting to eliminate minority-majority Districts - which all have one central reality: Racism. Indeed, it's not even being downplayed, but done brazenly and explicitly.

We cannot honestly deny this, we shouldn't accept this. It's unAmerican. It's anti-democratic. It is a significant threat to the very existence of the United States.

Yep. But I think things will be better in ten years. Trump will be dead, and no fascist movement has ever survived the death of its leader.

At some point, liberals' incessant, whiny, annoying, and knee-jerk usage of racist became hackneyed enough that their opponents went from thinking, did I do something wrong?, to going, I must be doing something right!

It's really that leftists are racist and this sort of thing keeps them on the plantation it works on more squishy Republicans too.

But if you know you aren't racist their pathetic little attacks are comical.

It's not targeted at you.

I feel sorry for you and your pathetic life...you see racism everywhere.

Why, you'd probably see racism in my son's marriage to an African woman.

Maybe if Trump fans didn't keep saying racist things they might stop being called racists?

Just a thought.

And sadly, we now see clearly just how many racists still exist in the US.
When Government leaders routinely use white nationalist memes in official communications like "replacement", "heritage American" and "remigration", it's hard to deny the obvious. Racism, like in Woodrow Wilson's administration, is now official policy. Those of us with functioning brains understand the motivation behind the defense of the current regime, no matter how idiotic and unsubstantive that defense is.

Well, I hope so. And I agree that the pendulum will eventually swing back. But the chats from the Young Republicans have me worried that this might last longer than Trump. Zeal is hard to crush.

I love your optimism, my friend. I share it. I fear, though, I won't l live through the darkness to witness it. I'm not even convinced that Trump is the fascist leader. He is just its current avatar.

And, sadly, as a counter, I am obliged to point out that fascist movements do outlive their leaders. Peronism still operates in Argentina; the AfD has taken up the Nazi cause in Germany; Le Pen is still working to regain power in France. One leader leaves the scene, and the movement becomes dormant... until it finds a new avatar. Fascism never really dies.

It's anti-democratic.

How could anyone be so ignorant? If anything, democracy has facilitated racism. Slavery was protected under the US constitution since the founding. After slavery ended in 1865, jim crow laws enforced racial segregation for nearly 90 years, and women weren't allowed to vote until 1920. The historical record shows that racism and democracy have long walked hand in hand. And it’s not just america - britain, france, canada, and australia all called themselves democracies while practicing slavery, colonialism, or racial discrimination. Democracy doesnt automatically produce justice, it simply reflects the will of the idiot majority, and for most of history, majorities have been racist.

Excellent book on the topic for those who would like to learn more.

Stamped From the Beginning by by the American historian Ibram X. Kendi

Hard to call it democracy though when the vote was so limited.

That won’t end well.

But, alas, I do think it is the current trajectory that MAGA has us on.
I've wondered for a while if the goal was more 1850 than 1950.

The Supreme Court has been on the fast track to excise the 13th-14th-15th Amendments from the Constitution. Their lodestar are the Civil Rights Cases of 1883. Those cases were the nadir of Constitutional law by the Supreme Court, on par with Dred Scott and Plessy v. Ferguson.

"Associate Justice John Marshall Harlan was the lone dissenter in the case, writing that the "substance and spirit of the recent amendments of the constitution have been sacrificed by a subtle and ingenious verbal criticism." The decision ushered in the widespread segregation of blacks in housing, employment, and public life that confined them to second-class citizenship throughout much of the United States until the passage of civil rights legislation in the 1960s." Roberts took Harlan's criticism as a methodology, using "subtle and ingenious verbal criticism" (read hypocrisy) to reach the same end, whereas his colleagues are more likely to just ignore the Constitution altogether to achieve their ends.

In your conversations with her, have you discussed racism she has faced?

The self executing disqualification clause is gone. The rest of the 14th can be fairly inconvenient for them, too. They can pretty much eliminate parts of the constitution just by deciding around them. That seems to be the strategy.
