President Trump on Friday predicted the government would shut down “for a period of time” amid an impasse in the Senate between Republicans and Democrats.

Trump expressed some pessimism about the two sides reaching an agreement that can garner 60 votes in the Senate. Republicans have 53 seats in the chamber, meaning at least seven Democrats will need to support a funding measure to keep the government open.

“We’ll continue to talk to the Democrats, but I think you could very well end up with a closed country for a period of time,” Trump said. “And we’ll take care of the military. We’ll take care of Social Security. We’ll take care of the things we have to take care of.

“A lot of the things Democrats fight for … will not be able to be paid,” Trump added. “So we’ll watch and see how we do with that.”

House Republicans earlier Friday approved a short-term government spending package to avert a shutdown at month’s end. The legislation was crafted by Republicans without Democratic input.

I don't get it. Trump can pass a budget and doesn't need the DEMs at all. He just needs to have a simple majority in the Senate and the House.

The down side is that if that trigger is pulled then the DEMs will be able to pass their budget when they are in the majority.

What the King of the Deal doesn't want to do - is actually make a deal.

This one is a tricky situation. The Republicans refuse to even talk about a deal to keep the government open and excluded the Dems from any discussions. This has really empowered the Dems with their voters who want to see some push back from the Dems. If the Dems cave it will really tick off the base. On the other hand if they shut down the government what's the off ramp to reopen it? The Dems are smart in using healthcare as the bargaining chip because that is a huge issue with voters on both sides, especially the Obamacare subsidies but I can't imagine the Republicans compromising on that which may alienate enough of their own base.

Unlike most shutdowns this one would be popular with Dem voters but may alienate too many Independents. I don't know how this will play out but I have a feeling a shutdown is on the way given the reluctance of Republicans to deal.

PS How come all those billions in tariffs isn't enough to keep the government running?
